Larger earthquake at some point in the future. It hit you from the back, and when you looked up you saw the truck doing that. Experts say smaller aftershocks are likely over the next few days. You may have actually been jolted by the shake alert this morning. Right around 9 30, the my shake app sounded an earthquake alarm on tens of thousands of smart phones across the bay area, but turns out the warning was not very accurate. We spoke with people that run the app and asked them why the initial of the quake was so far off the mark. The quake rattled phones across northern california, but the message attached said a larger earthquake was to hit. It was it appears to be a much bigger earthquake. He says they optimize for safety, and when the initial shaking registers higher on the app, it alerts people in a wider geographic range. The first seismic station that really sensed the earthquake was going on was very close to the epicenter so it felt a lot of shaking, essentially the punch of the earthquake hit the seismic station and it appeared to be much bigger than it really was. This all happened within about 20 seconds. The goal of the phone alert is to give people further from the epicenter a few seconds warning that shaking is coming, but those that we spoke to today say they saw mixed results. We did get the warning on the phone, there was an earthquake and thats when i saw how big it was, 4. 2, 4. 3, and it didnt make it better but more scary. Scientists involved in the quake alert said for the most part the app worked even if in the name of safety it sent out inaccurate information a little too quickly. When we create the initial estimate, it comes in high. We did have the estimate at 5. 2 to 5. 7, and that was a little high. They say the alert was likely heard by about 500,000 people. Scott budman, nbc bay area needs. I got mine this morning. Tomorrow another shake alert will go off on your phone, but its just a drill. Pg e wants to raise rates by double digits to help pay for wildfire safety improvements. Today pg e made its case for that rate hike in front of state regulators. Today pg e laying out their argument for raising the average customers monthly bill by 22 , and Officials Say not only does the company need to adjust for inflation and the cost of natural gas, but they need to reduce risks in gas and electric operations and that includes placing 2,100 miles of lines underground. Pg e has evolved from reacting and responding to events, and we are better than that now. You need us to be. The California Public Utilities Commission would need to approve it and heard the arguments from the company today. We need to invest in programs and tools to ensure we can continue to support our evolving Risk Management practices and now is not the time to stop investing in safety. While pg es plan calls for raising rates by 22 a month, the cpuc countered with a proposal that would include only a 12 increase. The proposal could equal 50 more a month for the average bill, and the councils proposal, 28 a month. The regulators plan approved some under grounding, but critics say its good pg e is focussing on safety, but also say a 22 hike in rates is just too much to ask for. Its very easy to have grand ideas and make proclamations when you are spending somebody elses money. For far too long rate payers have been looked at as an endless piggy bank from both the state and the utilities. The state Public Utilities commission could make a decision at its next meeting on november 2nd. Ian cole, nbc bay area news. President biden is making his way back to the u. S.
