Hello, think about this. It is being called risky, bold, even inhumane, but in just a few days, the governors experiments to tackle Mental Illness in california will begin. We have learned the first care courts are set to open monday, in San Francisco. It is a city we all know is fighting a National Reputation for a crisis on the streets. The governor is hoping to change all that by allowing people to request Court Ordered treatment for people with the most severe Mental Illnesses. When people get their meds, when people get support, we know we can turn peoples lives around. This is eminently solvable. Sentences go is one of the first seven counties in the state, and the only one in the bay area so far, to open care courts. While there has been a lot of talk about this controversy, there are still a lot of questions about the details of exactly how this will play out. But youre still having to come to court. The courts still going to order a treatment plan for you. So theres that aspect of it that makes it somewhat coercive. The San Francisco Public Defenders Office says even though participation in the care Court Program is voluntary, judges have the last say. The Mental Health association of San Francisco opposes care court, citing not enough resources to help everyone in need. San francisco has about 2500 Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Treatment beds and is adding more Mental Health advocates who say thats not enough and under the care court, judges can find the city and county if they dont provide the necessary help.
