Around the same time the web was first taking off, and long before SharePoint, there were dedicated tools for creating intranets. As early as 1996, Netscape was making a pitch for this space (hoping to oust Lotus Notes for those with long memories!). And even though SharePoint eventually came to dominate, some of the early pioneers live on, including Orchid Soft in the UK (now Oak) and Intranet Dashboard from Australia (now GreenOrbit).
Unfortunately these independent options faded from consciousness as IT teams started to standardize around Microsoftâs offering, and particularly as Office 365 grew, many potential buyers have been missing a trick.

We all like receiving a personalized service, whether it is being recognized by the Maitre dâ at our favorite restaurant or having a range of books offered to us by Amazon when we are looking for a specific title. Sometimes we may wonder just how these personalization algorithms work. I was just looking for a book on Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and among the books I was offered was one on the history of Britain from 1945-1951 and one on the history of the Habsburg family.
The majority of enterprise search vendors seem inordinately proud of their personalization engines, which toil away out of sight. These systems typically commit to delivering accurate and personalized results at the top of page one. What more could you want?
