She was born in Central Harlem and was originally trained as an attorney and was working on social justice issues after being trained at in new york. So at the law school, she became a Public Interest lawyer and spent nearly ten years representing homeless people, people with mental illness, People Living with aids. And in 1994, she was awarded fellowship on the future of the city of new york at Columbia University based on her lawyering work.
