Out of an initial field of 11 wrestlers from the KCII listening area, eight remain as the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines moves to day two. Four grapplers moved through Thursday’s day one with wins to stay in the championship bracket including Mid-Prairie’s Cael Garvey at 195lbs, Columbus’ Lane Scorpil at 113lbs and Chance Malone at 285lbs and Highland’s Bryce Thompson at 113lbs.
Four other wrestlers dropped their opening match on Thursday but rebounded to win a second match and stay alive in the tournament’s consolation bracket. They include Washington’s Ayden Frazer at 182lbs, Mid-Prairie’s Josh Wallington at 220lbs, Highland’s Easton Schlabaugh at 106lbs and Sigourney-Keota’s Cade Molyneux at 170lbs.
The class 2A section of the state wrestling tournament included six wrestlers from the KCII listening area Thursday.
Three of those wrestlers won their opening match to advance on the championship side of the bracket in their weight classes. Mid-Prairie junior Cael Garvey was a winner in dramatic fashion by 11-9 decision over No.7 Matthew Wirtz of Emmetsburg. Golden Hawk head coach, and Cael’s dad, Justin Garvey broke down the match Thursday night for KCII sports. “I think I aged five years during that match. We had a two point lead and unfortunately we squandered it away on stall calls. The kid was tall, he was posting up on our shoulder. We didn’t want to give in, they wanted us to circle back to the right so they could hit an ankle pick so instead we just backed out and got dinged. Washington and Columbus Community wrestling teams traveled to Davenport Assumption on Saturday for a Class 2A sectional to start up the postseason and four area grapplers advanced to districts.
Demon senior Ayden Frazer was not going to be denied a top two finish, as the 182 pounder finished second. He experienced an 8-5 decision setback loss to start the day, but battled back for a 7-0 win and 13-1 major to claim a runner-up spot. The Wildcats had three individuals advance in Lane Scorpil, Chance Malone, and Ethan Palmer. Scorpil didn’t have to break a sweat at 113 lbs with two byes and a forfeit win in the championship. Malone had a pair of pins at 285 lbs that totaled just 1:19 and Palmer was pinned in 12 seconds at 195 lbs, but created a fall as well in 3:06 to place second. The four wrestlers will compete for a spot at state on Saturday in Mount Pleasant.
The Columbus Community wrestling team traveled to Van Buren on Thursday for a triangular meet and split a pair of duals.
The Wildcats fell to Mediapolis 36-30, but defeated Van Buren 34-24. Against the Bulldogs, the Wildcats went 1-3 in contested matches with Ty Scorpil pinning his opponent in 1:57 at 113 lbs. The Wildcats went 3-2 in matches against the Warriors with Lane Scorpil having a fall in 2:48 at 120 lbs, Gerardo Orozco with a 10-1 major decision at 160 lbs, and Chance Malone with a pin in 1:38 at 285 lbs.
