Out of an initial field of 11 wrestlers from the KCII listening area, eight remain as the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines moves to day two. Four grapplers moved through Thursday’s day one with wins to stay in the championship bracket including Mid-Prairie’s Cael Garvey at 195lbs, Columbus’ Lane Scorpil at 113lbs and Chance Malone at 285lbs and Highland’s Bryce Thompson at 113lbs.
Four other wrestlers dropped their opening match on Thursday but rebounded to win a second match and stay alive in the tournament’s consolation bracket. They include Washington’s Ayden Frazer at 182lbs, Mid-Prairie’s Josh Wallington at 220lbs, Highland’s Easton Schlabaugh at 106lbs and Sigourney-Keota’s Cade Molyneux at 170lbs.
The 2021 Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament kicked off yesterday with the Class 1A morning session and three of five area grapplers advanced to day two of the annual event.
Highland’s Bryce Thompson won his first and only match on Thursday at 113 lbs with a 16-1 technical fall over St. Albert’s Zach Williams. The senior will compete in the quarterfinals against West Bend’s Donovan Hanson on Friday. Teammate Easton Schlabaugh was on the short end of a 10-8 decision in his first match at 106 lbs, but stayed alive in the tournament with a pin (:40) in the first round of consolations. Sigourney-Keota’s Cade Molyneux lost to his first opponent by fall (6:36), but rebounded for a 9-7 decision victory in the second match. Sigourney-Keota’s Cade Streigle and WACO’s Landan Provino saw their season come to a close with a pair of losses. Streigle was pinned in 2:47 and 5:11 at 195 lbs. Provino lost by fall in 38 seconds and 1:13 at 285 lbs.
