For weeks, Danielle Twemlow had driven her 5-year-old daughter Ramona Allen past the Kansas Discovery Center each morning on their way to pre-school, with only the promise of “soon” on their minds.
The regional children’s museum had in March 2020 closed to the general public, and in the 13 months and one day since that pandemic-related March 13 decision, it has only been open in very limited capacities, with the colorful and expansive indoor playscape closed to the general public.
So when the museum announced Wednesday would be its reopening date for the indoor playscape to the general public, Twemlow put it on her family’s calendar, and together, they counted down the days until Wednesday morning, when they were the first in line to re-enter the room full of wonders and activities.
Forty blessing boxes crisscross Topeka, and supporters are working to “stock the box” by filling up each.
The food drive will be Friday and Saturday in hopes of filling every blessing box with non-perishable food items.
People can bring their items to 1025 S.W. Fillmore St. Drop them off on the porch. Blessing boxes can be found scattered around the city, usually near streets or sidewalks, and are boxes where people can donate items.
Jeanine Russell, CEO and Queen Bee of nonprofit Bee the Blessing, said she wants everyone to drop off the food in a centralized location so people can see how much food is required to fill every blessing box in Topeka. She said her blessing box needs to be refilled three times a day.
