Downtown Topeka businesses plan food, drink specials for St Patrick s Day

Despite this year s St. Patrick s Day parade in downtown Topeka being postponed until later in the year, downtown businesses are still embracing the holiday by offering specials through the weekend and into next week. The Iron Rail, The Pennant, Brew Bank and The Celtic Fox will offer a variety of food and drink specials. Iron Rail Brewing, 705 S. Kansas Ave., is cooking up some traditional Irish dishes, including corned beef and cabbage, corned beef hash and shepherd s pie. The menu items will be available March 13 and 14. The restaurant will also be serving two specialty cocktails that can be purchased March 13 and 14.

The Pennant dedicates new patty melt to former DTI president Vince Frye

The Pennant s newest menu item is a patty melt with a twist. The Vince s Party Melt, as it is dubbed by the downtown Topeka restaurant, isn t only a unique play on the crowd-favorite sandwich but has been created in honor of former Downtown Topeka Inc. president Vince Frye. The sandwich, which was unveiled Friday to a room full of Frye s family, friends and colleagues and Frye himself, will be a permanent menu item. The sandwich dedication comes just a few months after Frye retired from his position as DTI president, a role in which he served for eight years. Frye collaborated with The Pennant to create the sandwich, which is made with a burger patty, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, a blend of horseradish, mustard and Thousand Island dressing and Frye s favorite topping: bacon. The ingredients are sandwiched between two slices of toasted marble rye bread.

Washburn University sociology class to hold community diaper drive

Even though she has lived in Topeka her whole life, Dominique Becher didn t know a lot about the local nonprofits and community organizations helping families in extreme need. But in taking a Washburn University sociology class focused on high-impact community engagement practices, Becher, and several other students like her, are getting first-hand experience in not only recognizing an issue in the community but working to bridge any needs from the issue. Students in one of Sangyoub Park’s courses, Social Class in the U.S., will host the class’s third annual diaper drive for Community Action from March 15 to 28.
