Elly Keyes hadn t thought very highly of a pen-and-ink drawing she’d made of the Kansas Statehouse during her sophomore year at Shawnee Heights High School, but then her teacher Avery Ayers-Berry encouraged her to enter it in as many competitions as she could.
About a year and a half after she first drew it, Keyes’ painting is now hanging in the U.S. Capitol.
“I didn’t like it at first,” said Keyes, who is now a junior. “It looked rough, since it was a pencil drawing at first. But the more I added, the better it started looking as I added more ink. It was fun to do all of the little details on the (Kansas) Capitol and the surrounding places.
The first coincidence was that lifelong friends Wesson Wagner and Bryce Driskell would get to work side-by-side as stockers at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on S.W. MacVicar Avenue.
The second was that the teens would be in the right place at the right time to team up and help a man who had suffered a suspected heart attack.
Wagner, a junior at Topeka High School, and Driskell, a senior at Topeka West High School, are credited with helping the man March 25 after he suddenly collapsed while shopping at the store.
Wagner said he remembers helping the man find some condensed milk on aisle 1011. As he walked away to finish unboxing and shelving items, the customer fell straight onto his back, dropping everything in his hands.
We all love a thick, juicy burger every once in a while, but when searching for a lighter meal, the Burger Stand still has you covered.
The restaurant, 2833 S.W. 29th St., which recently relocated to Brookwood Shopping Center from College Hill, gives its customers the option of transforming any of its delicious beef burgers, chicken or fish sandwiches into a house salad.
It s the best of both worlds, right? You can still enjoy a burger while getting in a healthy serving of greens.
We chose The Classic burger, which comes topped with Vermont cheddar, tomato and onions.
The burger arrives on top of The Burger Stand s house salad mixed greens, cucumber, tomato, red onions and a roasted garlic herb vinaigrette.
On March 6, 2017, Frito-Lay employee Caity Renfro was getting ready for her 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. shift at the local plant when tornado warnings were issued for Shawnee County.
Renfro, of Silver Lake, said she was in the direct path of a tornado, so she took shelter at home instead of making the nearly 20-mile drive to work. The coordinator on our shift at that time tried to reach out to me, she said. He didn t want people to be worried about calling in because he thought that the clause in the contract would cover that, where it specifies that something way out of your control would not be considered an attendance issue.
