we do not yet know who his permanent legal team will be for this case. we do not yet know what the first legal wrangling will be in this case, although we have a good guess. but that s what we re gonna jump in tonight, with his primetime special coverage. basically three major developments, major questions, major potential stories that emerge from this historic day. number one, first, news from the attorney general of the state of new york, tish james, speaking to our alex wagner, saying that this federal criminal case going forward against trump in florida now, it may mean that other legal proceedings against trump and multiple jurisdictions, potentially multiple states, those matters may now be put on ice. they may stop essentially out of deference to this federal court case that is proceeding against him in federal court in florida. if that is going to happen, what does that mean, exactly, particularly because trump
donald trump s federal criminal arraignment today is not the judge will preside over his trial for here on out. instead natural goes to a judge named 18 cannon, confirmed to the federal bench very recently, in 2020, just in the very final days of trump s presidency. and she has experience in the trump documents investigation. last year she took extraordinary action in favor of trump. she temporarily blocked the justice department from reviewing material that they had seized at mar-a-lago. now that decision by judge cannon was quickly reversed and resoundingly rebuked very conservative panel at the higher judge cannon didn t even have the jurisdiction to intervene the way she did. now that trump has been indicted that same overruled, rebuked judge, judge cannon, has been assigned, apparently at random, luck of the draw, to oversee this case going forward.

now given judge cannon s previous and very controversial into involvement in the matter related to an early stage of this case, there have been sustained calls, i would say increasingly impassioned sustain calls that judge cannon cannot be seen as a fair judge in his matter and then because of that she should recuse herself. it is basically her call, though. so far she is given no signal that she plans to recuse. what happens next? well, if prosecutors think judge cannon it cannot be impartial and they think she should not oversee this case, there are a few ways they can pursue her recusal. first they can basically just ask nicely. they can write a letter asking her to recuse herself. if that does not work, the prosecution can file a formal motion for recusal with judge cannon, again, though, but it s her call. if she still refuses to step down after the ask nicely, after the formally requested,
