possible compromise? no, that s not true, lawrence. what s really going on is many of these democrat senators have been reaching out to my members trying to figure out a way to get out of the box they re in. they are unable, and there are as many as eight or nine trying to come back to wisconsin. they can t figure out how to get out of the box. labor won t let them come back, and quite honestly, even if they did come back, we re not sure exactly what the republicans would ever compromise on. i know we can t do it in the senate on the budget repair bill. so they re concerned about a couple of my members, but at this point it seems as many as eight or nine of the 14 are ready to come home. let s talk about senator dale schultz on your side, the republican. he represents the 17th district, which president obama won 61-38. john kerry won his district. he is the senator who everyone is indicating is the one who is
don lemon is sitting in for ali velshi tomorrow. right now cnn 234newsroom continues with brooke baldwin. a lot unfolding here at the top of the hour. first, the house is expected to vote pretty soon here on whether they re going to keep the federal government running. the deadline here is midnight freeway. the clock is ticking. as we get closer to the deadline, what will happen? we re monitoring there on capitol hill. also, for a couple of weeks now we ve been following the angry protests there in wisconsin. well, now, really today is the day here as the republican governor is about to unveil his controversial new budget proposal. he calls it the budget repair bill. it looks like a lot of those protestors none too pleased about that. and in just a couple of minutes, i ll take to one of the state democrats who s been missing in action in wisconsin. why where is he? we ll find out.
wisconsin state senator bob erbebock joins us as well. he refuses to return to wisconsin. mike, is the led lideadline for? reporter: there s an aspect like apples and oranges. the governor will give the budget speak at 4:00 and he has said all along that unless he gets approval and a vote approving his budget repair bill by today, he won t reschedule the state s debt. that will be 165 million, and that s why he has to order 1500 state workers laid off. however, two things about that. he s also said he s going to hold off as long as he can in ordering those layoffs and he s going to submit a budget that has a million dollars in projected cuts. cuts to aid to local governments and school districts. that will cost more than 1500 jobs as the months go by should the cuts stick. the senate democrats will watch this speech this afternoon from a motel on the other side of the
