A group representing graduate students at Western University is adding its voice to others demanding the school’s embattled chancellor resign for taking a holiday trip while Canadians were advised to avoid non-essential travel.
In the letter to Linda Hasenfratz, the Society of Graduate Students said it considers her actions as “incompatible with the values of a Western community leader.”

A Western University professor has resigned his duties at the school’s graduation ceremonies in protest of Chancellor Linda Hasenfratz’s “reprehensible” December vacation amid a COVID-19 surge.
Calling it “the right thing to do,” biology professor Gregory Kelly said he could no longer serve as a marshal when in-person convocations resume because Hasenfratz, whose job includes overseeing the ceremonies, remains the school’s ceremonial leader.

The head of Western University’s board of governors spoke out Friday afternoon, days after the school’s chancellor drew fire for a recent holiday trip abroad.
Board chair Rick Konrad told The Free Press he expects it will be early next week before it’s reached any decision regarding Chancellor Linda Hasenfratz, whose mid-pandemic vacation has irked faculty and students.

“It’s a very difficult decision for someone who has done a great deal for Western and is much admired for her role with students in particular.” Konrad said. “She has a lot of remorse. We are working very hard to find the right solution.”
