President Alan Shepard said he agreed with Westernâs Board of Governors decision to condemn but not take steps to remove chancellor Linda Hasenfratz.
Hasenfratz came under fire in January after vacationing in Barbados over the winter break â although she resigned her seat on Ontario s vaccine task face, she held on to her position as Western University s symbolic figurehead. Shepard cites the main reason for his support is that Hasenfratz broke travel advisory, not the law, in a Feb. 25 interview with the
Gazette.
âI think the board got it exactly right,â Shepard said. âThey issued a public reprimand and in my years of experience in higher education, itâs unprecedented â Iâve not seen it.âÂ

A group representing graduate students at Western University is adding its voice to others demanding the school’s embattled chancellor resign for taking a holiday trip while Canadians were advised to avoid non-essential travel.
In the letter to Linda Hasenfratz, the Society of Graduate Students said it considers her actions as “incompatible with the values of a Western community leader.”
