I think when he goes to lexington first of all, he leaves behind all of the virginia that he had once known and which, really now for him is dead. And he goes to the valley where the social milue is more Stonewall Jackson than robert e. Lee. But there for the first time in his life, hes got a free hand to do what he wants to do. Its not like being superintendent of west point, where the chief of the corps of engineers was always looking over his shoulder. He is free to be the kind of person he wants to be, and he is extraordinarily successful as a college president. Hes a very Progressive College president. Hes getting rid of all the old curricula. Hes bringing in studies in journalism, in engineering, in law. Hes doing the kinds of things in the valley that Charles Norton elliott is doing at harvard. Hes cutting edge in terms of ped goejy.

Army as an institution was trying to manage a crisis that its leaders perceived during the war in vietnam, a crisis around race. And as i imagine almost all of you know, the u. S. War in vietnam was the first major conflict that the United States fought from the beginning with an integrated armed force, with a racially integrated armed force. And for much of that war, that process was treated as a great success. And in combat, it almost without exception was. But by the end of the 1960s, army leaders were talking about the war within the war and trying to figure out how to manage a racial crisis that they saw as starting to tear the army apart. Some diseases spread by other means. Rats may carry typhus. Mice may cause dysentery. Mosquitoes bring malaria, encephalitis. Rocky mountain fever, relaxing fever. Flies carry typhoid. Fleas carried you bionic plague. Some diseases spread through contaminated meat or food. Raw milk may cause diphtheria. Polluted water. Every year hundreds of thousands of people contract diseases and suffer from Communicable Diseases and many die of preventable inf
