I am the Vice President and director of economic studies here at brookings. I am also the founder and director for the center on regulation and markets, which is a relatively new endeavor at brookings. Its goal is to improve regulatory policy through independent research on regulatory performance and process, and to host events like this where we can have informed debate on regulation, and everything with the word reg in it. There is a long tradition at brookings working on regulatory policy. Way back in the 1990s in my youth and im going to stick by that being my youth i was affiliated on the aei side with the joint study on regulatory structures. That center no longer exists. I want to start something up again, and lo and behold, here we are. It is a particularly opportune one to focus our attention regulatory policy. In recent years we

Today as they think everyone in this room knows kicks off a very critical week for the u. S. India relationship. As Prime Minister modi is here in washington for a first meeting with President Trump. Here at Hudson Institute, we are delighted to host a special event hosted on the future of the u. S. India commercial partnership and we are also grateful to our friends at cspan for covering this event live. U. S. India bilateral trade has an estimated 11,420,000,000,000, less than one fifth of the u. S. China 640 billion bilateral trade relationship. India is americas ninth largest supplier of foreign goods and 18th largest export market. The worlds first in the worlds six largest economies respectively, we are hesitant to believe there is significant room for growth. The u. S. India relationship is an important one here

Reporter sara, executive orders are focused on rooting out trade abuses designed to put other countries on notice and commerce secretary wilbur ross fired a warning shot on cnbc earlier this morning. There are unintended consequences of doing nothing as well. So as to doing something, tough think about it this way, we are in a trade war. We have been for decades. The only difference is that our troops are finally coming to the rampart. The first order calls for a review of any country with which the u. S. Has a trade imbalance, the biggest one of course is china. Theyre looking for currency misalignment, over capacity in any industry and perhaps even lax enforcement of existing agreements on the part of the u. S. This review will be due in 90 days. Before we get to the new working class lets start where you did with the old workingclass. Start with your dad. I grew up in a workingclass household, neither my parents went to college. My dad went to the steel factory his entire life, ultimately becoming a machinist in detroit, in middletown, and ohio. It was the quintessential factory town. There are many factories and the town was built with the support of the factories. They built schools, hospitals, all of that stuff. My mom went to work when my brother was five and she works at an Office Manager in an orthodontist office. And heres heres the thing about growing up workingclass back then at least, for people who worked in that major manufacturing days like my dad did. We were workingclass by education and occupation, but really middleclass, by lifestyle. Theyre able
