washington. tara, good morning. reporter: good morning, michelle. well, hopefully this fix is finally the one that slows down this gusher. today president obama heads back to the gulf to check progress. this is what president obama could see when he visits the gulf coast today. birds drowning in thick black crude. this is not only heartbreaking, but it ticks us off. again you see these birds trapped in this oil. this shows you what s at risk along our coast. reporter: overnight, bp crews used robotic submarines to position a lid over the ruptured well so oil can be siphoned to the surface. the gushing crude made it difficult to tell whether the fix was actually working. it may be a day or two before bp knows for sure. we can t afford to wait any longer. every day, every day they wait is another day more oil is coming in to our coast, coming in to our wetlands. that s another day that maybe another pelican gets oil. reporter: critics on the gulf coast and in washingt
