In the year since the pandemic hit, the devastating effect it has had on America s families is no secret. Another new report is looking at just how much families are struggling.
Save the Children, an international humanitarian organization founded more than 100 years ago, released a report in March 2021 looking at four months of data from the U.S. Census Bureau Household Pulse survey to see how the pandemic is affecting families with kids under 18 across the United States. The report found disparities based on socioeconomic status, race, and location.

Caregiving has been a poignant topic of discussion during the pandemic, especially as many women are leaving the workforce for that reason. It s a conversation actor and director Justin Baldoni is shining light on in his new limited series
The father of two admits when he once thought of caregivers, he immediately thought of women. It s not something that I ve ever thought of, says Baldoni. And then I realized, Wow, it s been ingrained in me socially and culturally, since I was a baby that women are the nurturers, women are the caretakers.
Like many other parents during the pandemic, Rhiannon Menn says she found herself feeling helpless, and with so many families around her struggling, she wanted to do something to help. I wanted to find a way to support the families in my community while also keeping my own family safe, says the San Diego mom of two with one on the way.
She decided to turn her love for cooking into a charitable business called Lasagna Love, which launched in April 2020. She and her daughter began making and delivering lasagna to moms struggling, whether economically or emotionally. Why lasagna? When I think of lasagna, I think of a family sitting around a table sharing, laughing, and spending time together, says Menn. That s what I wanted to send people: not just a meal, but also warmth and kindness that can be so powerful during a difficult time.
