welcome to our viewers on pbs in america and around the globe. world leaders have offered help with rescue operations following two huge earthquakes which have devastated parts of southern turkey and northern syria. at least 3800 people are known to have died. rescuers are racing to save those trapped beneath the rubble. running for their lives. shaken to their foundations, whole buildings fell. and across southern turkey, peace became panic. people helped where they could. this was a series of powerful earthquakes, notjust one. they were only around 20 kilometres under the surface, and shallow quakes cause the most damage. in towns and cities across a huge area, the rescue efforts began. with diggers and sniffer dogs, teams of people began to dig frantically in search of survivors. for decades, turkey has been bracing itself for a huge quake. tonight everyone is a rescuer, and they all want to find a survivor. it s a painful wait for news. translation: there are people still
we re talking breaking news out of turkey where a major earthquake has struck the southern part of the country. officials say the death toll has now risen to at least 17. the u.s. geological survey says the 7.8 magnitude quake was centered east of nadagi in gaziant. p province. officials say multiple buildings have collapsed not just in turkey but also in syria. an aftershock with a magnitude of 6.7 struck northwest of the initial quake about 11 minutes later. a local journalist tells cnn there were up to eight very strong aftershocks in under a minute. let s take you now to cnn s jomana karadsheh for the very latest. more details coming in, jomana? reporter: we are starting to get more and more information, leila, coming from different parts of the country. we heard from the turkish interior minister saying they are getting reports from many places. at least ten provinces across southeastern turkey have been impacted by this major 7.8 magnitude earthquake. according to the

This was the moment the quake struck the unesco World Heritage listed city of marrakesh prompting people to sprint for the streets. The city is reporting a lower death toll, but considerable damage to buildings survivors have been describing their experiences. Walls started shaking, Picture Frames started falling off the walls. I realised we were going through some sort of a shake, an earthquake, obviously. People started screaming, i could hear all the. My windows were open, i could hear all the neighbours screaming. I opened the door, everyone was running out of their flats, running downstairs. Lots of panic, people screaming and shouting, screaming for their families, ladies screaming for their kids, where is my son . Where is my daughter . I would say for about 15, 20 minutes, it seemed like hours. But there are huge concerns in particular for the areas outside the city. Where Search And Rescue crews are working to reach people in the areas worst affected by friday nights powerful earthquake, which is now known to have killed more than 2,000 people. Three days of National Mourning have been declared. This is the small town of asni, in the atlas mountains, where few buildings have been left undamaged by the 6. 8 magnitude quake. Rescue teams have reached asni, after the Moroccan Army cleared a landslide on the access road. But other small Rural Communities remain cut off by rockfalls and there are reports of entire villages flattened. 0ur correspondent nick beake has made it to another community in the atlas mountains.
