This was the moment the quake struck the unesco World Heritage listed city of marrakesh prompting people to sprint for the streets. The city is reporting a lower death toll, but considerable damage to buildings survivors have been describing their experiences. Walls started shaking, Picture Frames started falling off the walls. I realised we were going through some sort of a shake, an earthquake, obviously. People started screaming, i could hear all the. My windows were open, i could hear all the neighbours screaming. I opened the door, everyone was running out of their flats, running downstairs. Lots of panic, people screaming and shouting, screaming for their families, ladies screaming for their kids, where is my son . Where is my daughter . I would say for about 15, 20 minutes, it seemed like hours. But there are huge concerns in particular for the areas outside the city. These incredible pictures show the damage to the community of taroudant. Here, soldiers and residents have been searching the rubble for survivors. There are reports that entire villages have been flattened. Roads to many of the worst hit areas have been blocked by landslides as imlil resident Alice Morrison explains. The 6. 8 magnitude quake struck a remote area of the Atlas Mountains, south of the city of marrakesh. Roads to many of the worst hit areas have been blocked by landslides. Imlil resident Alice Morrison has been trying to get through. It is apocalyptic. It took me three hours to cycle 16 kilometres downhill. There are rocks everywhere, there are massive holes. There is actually a crack right in front of my feet which is taking away half of the road. So it is very unpassable. 0ur correspondent nick beake is in the Atlas Mountains region and sent this update. We have just arrived in the province that has been worst affected by this earthquake. This is up in the Atlas Mountains. As we pulled up here a short time ago, we were greeted by the sight of an elderly woman wailing, tears were streaming down herface, and that is because already they have recovered 18 bodies just in this place alone. This is the hospital, and you can see some people are outside waiting for news of loved ones who have been treated. Lots of people are camping out for the night because they are too frightened to go back in, they are worried about aftershocks, they are worried that another earthquake will come. Just talking to some people here, they say they are desperately short of food and water and they really need supplies. The trouble is it is difficult to get up here. On our route up, all the roads were strewn with rocks and boulders and other debris, and that is difficult for rescuers but also for people from the ambulance service. Although we have seen some people from the Red Crescentjust arrive here. It is night time now but as you can see, there is lots going on. They will be working overnight and at times they will be going very quiet here listening out for any signs of life, but as is always the case with dreadful earthquakes like this, there is a window to try and find people, and with every hour that passes, the likelihood of finding people alive really does diminish. Well, the quake was the biggest in the region for many years. Why did it happen and what made it so deadly . 0ur science editor, rebecca morelle, explains. Its a very powerful earthquake. So what do we know about it . The earths surface is divided up into different parts called tectonic plates, and as theyjostle against each other, tension builds up and that energy is released as earthquakes. Lets take a closer look at morocco. It sits on the boundary of two plates, africa and eurasia. The African Plate is constantly pushing upwards, very slowly into the Eurasian Plate at about four millimeters a year. Now, the epicenter of the quake was here quite a long way from the boundary of the plates, more than 300 miles. But despite this distance, there are faults there that push up the Atlas Mountains. So its an area with a lot of earth movement. Whats made this quake particularly deadly is that it was shallow. It struck about 11 miles below the surface and it happened late in the evening. This earthquake has been relatively shallow and that means that there is less earth on top to basically dissipate the energy and the shaking. So the shaking, the vibrations will have been very energetic. And on top of this, they happened in the night. So this energetic shaking will have destroyed buildings with people that will have been sleeping. The full scale of the devastation isnt yet clear, although earthquakes do happen in this region, having one this powerful is unusual. Its the biggest there for more than 120 years. The problem is the buildings were not constructed to withstand it. Who in the local area experienced an earthquake bigger than this . And if theyre close to the epicenter, the shaking will have been very intense and buildings wont have been built to seismic resilience standards, even the modern ones. Aftershocks are now a major concern. Heres the first earthquake measuring magnitude 6. 8. A second one hit about 19 minutes later. That was recorded at magnitude 4. 9 with a death toll thats still rising. More of these tremors will make a desperate situation even more challenging. Lets get more on this. Im joined now byjonathan stewart, hes a civil and Environmental Engineering professor at the ucla Samueli School of engineering and an expert on earthquake engineering. What is your assessment of the scale of the earthquake and the damage it has inflicted because we still dont know the true extent of it . We still dont know the true extent of it . ,. , ~ , extent of it . The earthquake is a very large extent of it . The earthquake is a very large event extent of it . The earthquake is a very large event to extent of it . The earthquake is a very large event to be a very large event to be occurring away from their Plate Boundary. As your lead segment described, this is 500 kilometres from the near Plate Boundary so this is the mid late earthquake and for that kind of a region, this is a large event. fix, that kind of a region, this is a large event. A large event. A midplate earthquake. A large event. A midplate earthquake, you a large event. A midplate earthquake, you were a large event. A midplate earthquake, you were saying . Well, it all depends on your point and how rare is that . Well, it all depends on your point of l all depends on your point of view. It is rare from in comparison to Plate Boundary areas where you get earthquakes much more frequently and it is also very rare compared to any kind of Human Timescales so nobody living in the region would have experienced an earthquake of this size. But from a geological point of view, the mountains are there for a region, that is because they are there. Those athletes would have been hundreds of thousands of years ago. My Colleague Thousands of years ago. My colleague rebecca was talking about how shallow the earthquake was. What more can you offer in terms of insight into how and why that might have been the case . 50. Into how and why that might have been the case . Into how and why that might have been the case . So, it was a normal have been the case . So, it was a normal fault have been the case . So, it was a normal fault earthquake have been the case . So, it was a normal fault earthquake in i a normalfault earthquake in this mountainous area, sorry, it was a reverse slip earthquake in this mountainous area, and earthquakes of this type are often fairly shallow. Shallow forest seismologist means in the upper 70 kilometres and this was about 28 kilometres. So it is shallow, but compared to other parts of the world that have other shallow earthquakes like california or turkey, this is a fairly typical depth, it is not unusually shallow for this kind of region. Unusually shallow for this kind of re. Ion. . Unusually shallow for this kind of reuion. . , unusually shallow for this kind of region of region. And what is the risk of region. We can expect aftershocks as large as the high fives, maybe even around sex, this would be fairly normal for around sex, this would be fairly normalfor an around sex, this would be fairly normal for an earthquake of this size. Around six. So unfortunately the venerable structures should not be occupied any time soon. Jonathan stewart from the university of california, thank you forjoining us and sharing your expertise with us. Mr; your expertise with us. My pleasure lets turn to india where the second and final day of the g20 summit has just got under way. A short time ago, Global Leaders began gathering for a ceremony at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, indias Independence Leader, before final sessions are held. On saturday, the group issued a joint declaration on the war in ukraine but the statement made no mention of russian aggression. Live now to delhi and we can speak to our south asia correspondent samira hussain. Samira, whats the latest there . Well, the big news of course happened, it is getting a joint statement on ukraine. And after a lot of discussion and back and forth between the leaders, they were able to agree on some language. However, there has been quite a bit of criticism with regards to the language because, as you rightly pointed out, there is no criticism of russias aggression or not even any mention of russias aggression. So, does it actually holds any weight . Yes, it does give india that elusive joint statement which is what they wanted, but because it is so watered down, there are questions about whether or not that actually matters. Lets ask someone who will probably know a lot more than i have. I am joined by a professor at Cambridge University and the Deputy Director of the g20 policy group, thank you very much forjoining us. I am wondering what does this statement mean . It is certainly very different from what was written in bali. Written in bali. Absolutely, Prime Minister written in bali. Absolutely, Prime Minister modi, written in bali. Absolutely, Prime Minister modi, he i written in bali. Absolutely, | Prime Minister modi, he got written in bali. Absolutely, Prime Minister modi, he got his win, Prime Minister modi, he got his win, he Prime Minister modi, he got his win, he got what he came for, a joint win, he got what he came for, a joint agreed communique, but exactly joint agreed communique, but exactly as you say, something that is exactly as you say, something that is significant only watered down and doesnt even have watered down and doesnt even have some of the strength of language that we had a year ago at the language that we had a year ago at the bali 620 summit. So there at the bali 620 summit. So there is at the bali 620 summit. So there is really not a lot here, if what there is really not a lot here, if what we there is really not a lot here, if what we care about is getting if what we care about is getting a communique, then we have getting a communique, then we have it. Getting a communique, then we have it, but if we care about some have it, but if we care about some sort have it, but if we care about some sort of substantive process some sort of substantive process and result in ukraine, we are process and result in ukraine, we are further away than we were we are further away than we were a we are further away than we were a year ago. Were a year ago. So, we put that question were a year ago. So, we put that question to were a year ago. So, we put that question to the were a year ago. So, we put that question to the indian | that question to the Indian Foreign minister and the reply was, well, look, that was bali and this is new delhi, the issues and the problems then are different than what it is now, and that this statement reflects the current situation. How would you react to that . I think that is absolutely right. Year think that is absolutely right. Year later, a year deeper into the war. Year later, a year deeper into the war, and the situation is not the war, and the situation is not changing. There is still no end in not changing. There is still no end in sight, and ifanything, the likelihood of resolution in the likelihood of resolution in the near the likelihood of resolution in the near term is the likelihood of resolution in the nearterm is a near impossible at it. So, absolutely, the Indian Foreign minister absolutely, the Indian Foreign minister is absolutely right, this does reflect a very dark time, this does reflect a very dark time, geopolitically, for us in the world time, geopolitically, for us in the world time, geopolitically, for us in the world. ,. ,. ,. The world. Now, we are watching ictures the world. Now, we are watching pictures of the world. Now, we are watching pictures of the the world. Now, we are watching pictures of the leaders pictures of the leaders arriving, and they have just gone to visit Mahatma Gandhi s shrine. I am wondering now that the big news has happened, what is left on the agenda for leaders to discuss . Well, today is principally leaders to discuss . Well, today is principally about leaders to discuss . Well, today is principally about meeting is principally about meeting the outreach participants, the invited guest to the club. find invited guest to the club. We service the other day the African Union being formally welcomed into the club, formally welcomed into the club, and so today is all about strengthening a relationship with strengthening a relationship with the global south, which is a with the 6lobal south, which is a key with the global south, which is a key priority for Prime Minister modi. | a key priority for Prime Minister modi. ,. , minister modi. I certainly want to talk about minister modi. I certainly want to talk about bringing minister modi. I certainly want to talk about bringing in minister modi. I certainly want to talk about bringing in the i to talk about bringing in the African Union. I am wondering if that is really significant, in terms of indias goal to try and be this sort of go between between the west of the global north, and the global south. Was that achieved . In this one case was that achieved . In this one case, i was that achieved . In this one case, i think so. You was that achieved . In this one case, ithink so. You know, when case, ithink so. For this club, as one of the main south . For this club, as one of the main global south . So, really too big things that have come out of these 620 sessions are so far, the inclusion of the African Union and, yes, getting that paragraph on ukraine. Samir hussein in delhi at the moment, thank you very much. Lets bring you those alive pictures from delhi. This is the memorial of Indian Independence leader Mahatma GandhlIndependence LeaderMahatma Gandhi, and what we saw a few moments ago were World Leaders who were filing past the memorial. It has been decorated especially for the g20, memorial. It has been decorated especially for the 620, it doesnt normally have this many flowers or reefs around it, but of course, delhi has been decked out for indias moment on the International Stage for the 620 on the International Stage for the g20 summit. It looks like, we can see our floral rates that have been left by every member of the g20, that have been left by every member of the 620, so every 620 member of the 620, so every 620 member nation, every leader, has left a wreath at the very famous memorial in new delhi which is the memorial to indias Independence LeaderMahatma Gandhi. And i am not sure whether leaders have gone now but we did see them all, including us President Joe Biden and british Prime Minister rishi sunak. There was the wreath from joe biden and the wreath from joe biden and the United States there. So, we will of course bring you all the very latest on the g20 summit. Wejust mentioned the very latest on the g20 summit. We just mentioned joe biden there, well further us president , the Dip Of Attic Tour will continue. Hes scheduled to arrive in vietnam on sunday. There, hell meet with the leader of vietnams ruling communist party, and other key leaders. The United States and vietnam are expected to declare themselves strategic partners, as both countries try to counter beijings growing military and diplomatic influence in asia. I asked our correspondent laura bicker how big a deal this is for the two former foes. I have spoken to a number of analysts on this and they do say it is more symbolic than significant. But they say its huge when it comes to these ties between vietnam and of course the United States. Vietnam has managed to emerge from its brutal and bloody past. The two sides, america and vietnam, have also managed to create quite a close bond over the last 50 years and in the last few years for instance, President Biden has sent most of his cabinet. He has sent the defence secretary, he has sent his Vice President , he sent his foreign secretary. This is a deal they have wooed vietnam with and i think this is the culmination of all of that work when President Biden arrives here today and when he signs that comprehensive strategic partnership. There was a bit of talk that it wasnt going to be raised to that level, that only one tier was going to be raised, but it does seem that washington has managed to get the deal and encouraged vietnam tojoin forces. Here in the uk a terror suspect, who evaded police for more than three days after escaping from jail in south west london, has been returned to custody. Daniel khalife, whos 21, was caught while riding a bike in west london. Our Home Affairs CorrespondentDaniel Sandford has been following the story. A National Manhunt now at an end. Britains most wanted man, Daniel Khalife, arrested at this spot in west london. A Terrorism Suspect back in custody after 75 hours on the run. This morning, Police Closed in on him as more and more intelligence came into scotland yard. This stately home and gardens on the edge of west london became the focus after reports he had been in the area in the middle of the night. The Citywide Search was narrowing down. Helicopters overhead, dogs on the ground, search teams aided by secret m15 techniques, and then, the breakthrough. One of those officers following a lead ended up here, and saw Daniel Khalife on a bicycle and pulled him to the ground. From the moment it was reported to the police, we have had a very substantial amount of resource on this investigation. It has been 75 hours from the moment of his escape to the time of his capture, and a huge effort has gone into that. Im grateful to the public, officers and staff and the media for their help. On wednesday morning, khalife, who had been working in wandsworth prisons kitchen, escaped underneath a food delivery lorry. Police say he was first seen near a major Roundaboutjust A Mile from the jail. From there, he moved west, with Police Chasing leads north of the thames into chiswick this morning. Khalife was finally arrested 12 miles away on a canal path in northolt. Khalife will be settling back into a cell and heading back to the courts. Now the attention turns to the government. How could a prisoner escape under a lorry . It is good news that we have recaptured the person concerned. As people already know, the Justice Secretary has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances of his escape and that work will continue, and this is obviously very welcome news and again, my thanks to the police but also to the public. The police regard this as a Textbook Operation the former soldier tracked down in a city of eight million. The question is, how did the prison manage to lose just one man among 1,600, all supposedly locked behind bars . Lets get some of the days other news now. They leave little gifts for her, little mementos, just to say how much they appreciated her writing. Good morning, all. Wow, what an incredible week of weather we have just experienced across the uk. For six consecutive days we Saw Temperatures on or above 30 degrees. That was a september record and on saturday, we saw the highest temperature we have seen this year, with 33 degrees. The Weather Story will change though over the next couple of days with the introduction of this pretty slow moving Weather Front. It will gradually change the Wind Direction to more of a north westerly, which is going to introduce, slowly, some fresher air from the north. But before that, weve got quite a muggy feel out there and some sharp thundery downpours pushing in from the south west over the next few hours. Temperatures first thing Sunday Morning will be sitting mid to high teens, quite widely across england and wales. A little bit fresher, particularly to the north west of the great glen. But please bear that in mind if you have got a ticket for the start line for the great north run. Its going to be a muggy old story and there will be a lot of sunshine around as well, both for the spectators and the athletes as well. We run the risk of some thundery downpours continuing to move their way steadily north as we go through the day, so its going to be sunny spells and sharp showers. The showers pretty hit and miss there and with the sunshine, we will continue to see some warmth. Some of those showers could once again be heavy and thundery as theyre moving their way steadily northwards. Into scotland, Central Parts Of Scotland and northern ireland, largely fine and dry and here is our weatherfront into the far north west still some outbreaks of rain here. So a fresher feel here but elsewhere, we could still see temperatures into the mid to high 20s, perhaps peaking in the south east 32, possibly 33 degrees once again, depending on how much sunshine we see. As we go through the evening and into the early hours of monday morning we see some sharp thundery downpours began drifting their way steadily northwards. The thunderstorms will gradually ease and that Weather Front will gradually slip its way steadily south. Temperatures perhaps into the mid teens ahead of it but its monday when we will start to see the signs of more of a significant change. As we go through the week ahead, it turns a little bit fresher and certainly more unsettled. Thats it, take care.
