Week. Youre live in the cnn newsroo newsroom. Good morning. Im carol costello. Thanks for joining me. Day 35. The search area shrinks, but a sobering reality settles in. It may not shrink anymore. Five weeks and the batteries on the flights socalled black boxes are dead or dieing. Still this mornings upbeat assessment is encouraging. We have very much narrowed down the search area and we are very confident that the signals that we are detecting are from the black box on mh370. Were now getting to the stage where the signal from what we are very confident is the black box is starting to fade and we are hoping to get as much information as we can before the signal finally expires. Cnns Matthew Chance is at the heart of the search in perth, australia. Good morning, matthew. Reporter good morning, carol. Thats right. The search is continuing. Remember its a 24hour search now. Even though darkness has fallen here in perth and in the area a thousand miles off the coast of perth, as the searc

New this morning, a break through headline. All 227 passengers from Malaysia Flight 370 have been cleared of any wrongdoing. Thats according to the Malaysia Police chief. So far 170 people have been interviewed as part of their criminal investigation and more interviews are expected. Still, 26 days into the search there are no clear suspects. As we have sit here, only the passengers has been cleared. The rest, no. The focus of the investigation remains on those pilots and those who had access to flight 370 before it disappeared. Senior International Correspondent Nic Robertson joins us with more from kuala lumpur. Hi, nic. Reporter hi, carol. Watch and find out. Also in the wake of the ft. Hood shooting, well introduce you to an army general with a solution to the problem of mentally unstable soldiers with guns, and well tell you why he cant get his way in washington. Finally, a shakespearean tragedy related to syria, but its not what youre thinking. This one will actually make you smile. But first heres my take. For those of you tired of the coverage of Malaysian Airlines flight 370, i want you to try an experiment. When youre with a group of friends whose eyes might roll over when you even bring up the issue, ask them what they think happened to the plane. Very quickly you will find yourselves in the midst of a lively discussion with many different competing theories. Each plausible, each with holes. The plane was hijacked someone will say. But then why no demands . It was an accident someone else will say. Why were there no distress signals . This mystery of what actually happened is at the heart of the as the nation wit
Signals consistent with those emitted by aircraft black boxes on two separate occasions. I can tell you that ocean shield has been able to reacquire the signals on two more occasions. Late yesterday afternoon and late last night perth time. The detection yesterday afternoon was held for approximately five minutes and 32 seconds. The detection late last night was held for approximately seven minutes. Ocean shield has now detected four transmissions in the same broad area. Yesterdays signals will assist in better defining a reduced and much more manageable search area on the ocean floor. I believe we are searching in the right area, but we need to visually identify aircraft wreckage before we can confirm with certainty that this is the resting place of mh370. For the sake of the 239 families, this is absolutely imperative. Today the ocean shield is continuing the slow, painstaking and methodical work to refine the location around the four acoustic detections. We are not yet at the point
Youre in the situation room. Searchers race against time to find traces of flight 370. Here are the latest developments. Questions are now being raised about a new map said to show the airliners radar track and shows a much different flight track. The airliners turn is being viewed as a criminal act. Malaysian officials now say the last words from the cockpit were good night, malaysian 370. The earlier version was all right, good night. The change raises questions about the handling of the investigation. And as planes get ready to resume searches of the airliner, pinger locators are on the way to the search zone but the batteries powering the black box signals will likely die within days. Our analysts and our reporters are standing by in washington as well as around the world with the kind of special coverage that only cnn can deliver.
