despite what malaysian authorities are saying are we any closer to finding this plane? we are a lot closer to knowing the whereabouts of the aircraft. what the inmarsat evidence today along with the aaib and what we learned from the malaysian government is we can rule out the northern corridor. this plane went down in the southern corridor and by the words of the inmarsat, in the south indian ocean. mary, can you remember a time when a conclusion was made about a plane crash without a known crash site or any debris found at all? no, i really can t. and also i can t remember a time when the conclusion was drawn this early. in fact, the ntsb is usually criticized for dragging things out much longer and having a series of hearings. this is rather early and to
disappearance of flight 370 and even though malaysia s prime minister says flight 370 bent down somewhere in the southern indian ocean, plenty of questions remain about the information used to reach that definitive conclusion. china, in particular, wants malaysians to share all of their evidence. let s bring in cnn s richard quest. what do you think of the headline that based on the inmarsat data, the malaysian government says everyone basically is dead right now? is that enough to tell these families that their loved ones are gone? i think you have to take it as more than just inmarsat. inmarsat looked at the data, the pings. they went much further in the triangulation. they then passed that evidence on to the aaib, the british equivalent of the ntsb. enormously experienced. and there was a very large peer
company that provided the satellite data which indicated northern and southern corridors, inmarsat, has been performing further calculations on the data, using a type of analysis never before used in any investigation of this sort, they have been able to shed more light on mh-370s flight path. based on the new analysis, inmarsat and the aaib, have concluded that mh-370 flew along the southern corridor and that its last position was in the middle of the indian ocean west
overarching picture. what they had was existing data that we had had heard before. what they did was went back and refined it again and again and again. and it was done between both inmarsat, who received the data. and then passed it on through a service to the airline. and through the aaib, the british air action investigation board. and mike can tell us the mechanics. this ises the extremity of doing what they do. they had never done this before. they had to use new techniques. they had to refine the techniques they were doing before. and they had to also ensure it was at such a level of confidence that they could come out and the malaysian prime minister could actually say the flight ended in the if you re going to tell families their hope is done, that they all is lost, you better be bloody sure. and what you re saying is that this new math gets us there, colonel? is that what this is?
malaysian prime minister made that announcement. it is, therefore, with deep sadness and regret that i must inform you that according to this new data, flight mh 370 ended in the southern indian ocean. such difficult news for the families, they ve been waiting, hoping beyond hope somehow their loved ones would be alive, but we re hearing today from the malaysian prime minister he does, indeed, believe and the air investigation branch, a british group, this new, never-been-used before information that this analysis concluding this flight indeed went down in the indian ocean. i want to take you now to keir
