Valdez, AK – During their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 18, Valdez City Council appointed Dennis Fleming to fill a vacancy as the seventh member of the city council.
With Mayor Sharon Scheidt’s election to a full term as mayor, a short-term vacancy was created to fill her previous seat as a member of the city council.
According to Valdez Municipal Charter Section 2.14, if a vacancy occurs on the city council, except in the case of recall, the city council shall fill the vacancy by appointment within thirty days. The temporary appointment shall be for a term ending at the regular city council meeting immediately following the next regular municipal election.

Questioned and absentee ballots will be counted by the Canvas Board on 5/5/2021.
A hand count of all School Board write-in votes will be conducted by the Canvas Board on 5/5/2021.
Official results will be released following the counts by the Canvas Board.
Valdez City Council will certify the election results during their regular meeting on 5/5/2021.
Newly elected School Board Members will be sworn in during the School Board regular meeting on 5/10/2021.
Newly elected Mayor and Council Members will be sworn in during the City Council regular meeting on 5/18/2021.

Brief Biography: I can’t think of any place in the world that I would rather live than Valdez, Alaska. Valdez is a fantastic community with beauty all around us and in the people who call this place home. I’ve had the privilege of being a third-generation Valdez resident. Buccaneer blue runs in my family’s blood. I graduated from Valdez High School, and so did my five adult children.

Brief Biography: Kathy moved to Valdez in 1980 after upbringing in Oregon, New Jersey, and Washington, Pomona College in California, Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, and family practice residency in Seattle. She and her late husband Dr. Andy Embick raised two daughters here, who went from Valdez City Schools to their current endeavors as a general surgeon at Alaska Native Medical Center and an MSW with a subspecialty in dramatherapy practicing out of Hawaii.
