Brief Biography: I can’t think of any place in the world that I would rather live than Valdez, Alaska. Valdez is a fantastic community with beauty all around us and in the people who call this place home. I’ve had the privilege of being a third-generation Valdez resident. Buccaneer blue runs in my family’s blood. I graduated from Valdez High School, and so did my five adult children.

I want to focus this week on a particular item I encountered in the 1956 edition of Vern Decoux’s Pass Bureau scrap books. One thing Vern was diligent about was detailed documentation of events like weddings, graduations and special events. He was a wonderful writer and insightful in his comments. My attention was drawn, in this particular volume, to a beautiful picture of a young couple who were married that year. That young couple was Gino and Rose Quarin and, as usual, the write-up, that accompanied the all important wedding portrait, went into detail about how the bride was dressed. These were pretty important events back then and the fact that journalists chose to diligently document the bride’s appearance in detail makes them a treasure. In this case I will share the exact wording of the description of Rose’s attire, so you can see what I mean.

Warm spring temperatures are inviting anglers of all ages to step into the outdoors and enjoy wonderful fishing opportunities. Many of the community ponds near suburban areas hold excellent populations of stocked trout and other species, and provide a perfect fishing environment for our younger anglers.
A reminder to all anglers that striped bass fishing and targeting is closed throughout the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries, and will reopen on May 1. For more information on striped bass seasons and closure areas, please visit the department’s striped bass maps page.

As with this column in its attempts to be light-hearted, nostalgic, and anecdotal, there are often social constructs and stories du jour that slow my roll.
It s easy to play the role of flippant pompous jerk once a week from behind print, but I am highly aware of my surroundings within this newspaper. While stretching the broth as far as possible on a stew about mischievous youth and a high school bus egging incident with Sonora, a real news story landed in this same paper yesterday . . .
