DOST s 3D printed valved holding chambers get PCMC s nod – Manila Bulletin

(DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña’s Facebook) Respiratory therapists of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) have expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Department of Science and Technology-Industrial Technology Development Institute’s (DOST-ITDI) valved holding chambers (VHCs) that can be used by both coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and non-COVID patients. DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said six respiratory therapists of PCMC conducted the performance evaluation of the VHCs that were designed and 3D printed at Materials Development (MATDEV) Laboratory of the DOST-ITDI. “The purpose of the evaluation was to check for observable changes in the VHCs after sterilization and application of aerosol medicine,” he said in a report.

According to Singapore-based magazine, “the Asian Scientist 100 list celebrates the success of the region’s best and brightest, highlighting their achievements across a range of scientific disciplines.” To be acknowledged on the Asian Scientist 100 list, the honouree must have received a national or international prize in the preceding year for his or her research, it said. “Alternatively, he or she must have made a significant scientific discovery or provided leadership in academia or industry,” the magazine said. Published April 28, 2021, 2:52 PM An official of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has been named as among this year’s Asian Scientist 100 by the award-winning science and technology magazine based in Singapore for designing the mosquito ovicidal/larvicidal trap system aimed at reducing the incidence of dengue fever in the country. Asian Scientist Magazine has included Dr. Annabelle V. Briones, director of the Department of Science and Technology- Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI), in its list of top 100 Asian scientists for 2021. Dr. Annabelle V. DOST to develop protein-rich food from plants

Department of Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato dela Peña (TOTO LOZANO/ Presidential Photo / MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) “As the demand for protein is now poised to overtake the current supply of meat sources, the DOST is finding ways for protein-rich food to be developed from local food processing wastes and underutilized legumes,” DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said in a report. He said the project is led by Lourdes Montevirgen of DOST- Industrial Technology Development Institute ITDI). Montevirgen’s team is “now exploring various methods to produce protein concentrate from industrial scale processing by-products like meal cake and bran,” he said.  “For the local legumes, the team will study specific unconventional sources,” he added.
