SLEEPY EYE Police Chief Matt Andres discussed the virtues of surveillance cameras at the Sleepy Eye City Council Tuesday.
“I think this is the future of law enforcement,” said Andres. “We tested them at Sportsmans Park because there is Wi-Fi there. They have 30 days of video storage and learned the cameras were good. We need them downtown, around the schools, and baseball park.”
Andres said one company offered to sell two cameras with a five-year license, and cloud-based data storage for $3,597.
“I’m not asking to buy them now. I’ll put together a plan for the finance committee,” Andres said. “These as the best cameras I’ve seen. They’re really impressive. They even have license (plate) reading technology.”

ST. PETER Nicollet County commissioners unanimously approved a separation agreement with human resources director/assistant county administrator Jamie Haefner Tuesday.
Action came without discussion on a motion by Commissioner Marie Dranttel, seconded by Commissioner Jack Kolars.
On April 2, commissioners accepted Haefner’s resignation. Under the agreement, in exchange for the release of claims, the County shall pay Haefner her regular salary at her final rate of pay, dental, and health insurance contributions through June 25, beginning the pay period after her right to rescind her release of all claims expires.
Haefner is deemed to have elected COBRA coverage effective April 2. No additional leave benefits shall accrue following her March 25 resignation date.

BROWN COUNTY Brown County Public Health reported 29 new COVID-19 cases Monday, April 12 since the last report on April 9.
New, laboratory-confirmed cases ranged in age from under age 10 to individuals in their 60s.
Public health reported 2,912 total confirmed cases, 99 active cases in isolation, 2,774 total cases out of isolation and 39 COVID-19-related deaths.
“We encourage people seeking COVID-19 vaccines to sign up on our wait list on our Facebook site or call our office at 507-233-6820,” said Brown County Public Health Supervisor Jaime Brand.
The Brown County COVID-19 dashboard reported 142 total hospitalizations and 17 individuals in ICU Monday.
Confirmed COVID-19 cases by month in 2021 are 210 in January, 211 in February, 313 in March and 162 in April so far.

Erna Zahn, the oldest Minnesotan, is celebrating her 113th birthday Wednesday.
NEW ULM A woman believed to be Minnesota’s most senior citizen turns 113 on Wednesday, April 14.
Oak Hills Living Center resident Erna Zahn is believed to be the tenth oldest resident in the United States and the thirty-first oldest person in the world.
“Nobody has come forward to tell me anybody is older than her in Minnesota,” said Zahn’s daughter Marley Kuckhahn of New Ulm.
Kuckhahn said she uses Wikipedia, a free, multilingual open-collaborative online encyclopedia as her point of reference for how her mother’s age ranks in the world.
