Court trial begins for NU man | News, Sports, Jobs

Stancer BROWN COUNTY A 45-year-old New Ulm man is undergoing trial on four felony first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges in Brown County District Court. The trial began Thursday. Travis J. Stancer of New Ulm faces charges of sexual contact with person under age 13 between April 25, 2011, and April 24, 2014. Stancer is accused of engaging in sexual contact and using force or coercion to accomplish it; plus engaging in sexual contact with a person nearer of kin to him than first cousin. The victim, 14, testified that Stancer forced her to have sex with him a number of times several years ago and that he hit her, slapping her in the face when he was drunk.

Commissioners OK land certification | News, Sports, Jobs

fbusch@nujournal.com BROWN COUNTY By a 4-1 vote Tuesday, Brown County commissioners approved certification for a tract of land the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service recently secured to purchase in Section 34, Sigel Township. Commissioner Dean Simonsen cast the dissenting vote regarding about 100 acres of land owned by Greg Mikkelson. Approval came on Commissioner Dave Borchert’s motion, seconded by Commissioner Scott Windschitl. The property would be open to the public and managed as a Waterfowl Production Area as part of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Commissioners tabled the item Feb. 2 with a stipulation to notify abutting property owners, getting a list of other properties, talking to landowners, and getting a reference from another county regarding noxious weed control.

Kirchhoefer sentenced to 54 months in prison | News, Sports, Jobs

fbusch@nujournal.com BROWN COUNTY A 33-year-old former Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s teacher was sentenced to 54 months in the St. Cloud Correctional Facility in Brown County District Court Tuesday. Neil A. Kirchoefer of Eden Prairie was convicted of two felony counts of using minors in pornographic work and one count of felony possession of pornographic work. As part of an Aug. 10, 2020, plea agreement, five counts of possession of pornographic work involving minors and two counts of disseminating pornographic work were dismissed. Conditions included providing a DNA sample when directed and registering as a predatory offender. He was credited with four days served and ordered to report to the Brown County Jail at 6 p.m. Feb. 23.

MnDOT plans to rehab Highway 14 spring wayside | News, Sports, Jobs

fbusch@nujournal.com Weather permitting, restoration work on the New Ulm spring wayside on Highway 14 will begin March 1 with tree removal, expected to last a week without major traffic impacts. The goal of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) project is to bring the site to potentially eligible status for the National Register of Historic Places. NICOLLET COUNTY With favorable weather, a project to restore the New Ulm spring wayside on U.S. Highway 14, a mile east of the city, will begin with tree removal the first week of March. Tree removal may take up to a week without major traffic impacts, according to a news release from Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) District 7 Public Affairs Coordinator Rebecca L. Arndt.
