Reporter more th the inmates who manage to escape are caught within 24 hours. Lets hope that this man falls into that category and is back behind bars very soon. According to polk county, 45 yearold Joseph Flanagan of lakeland escaped on bob Phillips Road in bartow yesterday afternoon around 3 30. Place say flanagan was working in Fleet Maintenance and he this one. Its almost like deja vu for polk county officials. Last month an inmate led them on a manhunt after they say he made a makeshift weapon, kidnapped a corrections officer, and stole this pickup truck. Officials were able to catch the man in Pinellas County. For the current case, flanigan was in jail for stealing and violation of probation. He had a 300 day sentence and had already served a quarter of his time. If you see him, call police. How often does this type of thing happen where someone is able to escape . Reporter you can argue that one escape is too many, but it does happen. According to the state department of corrections, from escapes statewide. The victim tells 10 news that he was walking after closing time when a group of guys jumped out of this car and started fighting them. Trying to do a uturn but popped the curb, slammed the man onto the hood and into the entryway of the bad monkey bar. The driver, get that, runs away leaving the victim to collapse on the sidewalk. I remember looking down and seeing the Nissan Altima symbol t hit me and i popped up on the car little bit and then it threw me all the way into the wall. I was scared. I didnt know what was gonna happen. The driver intentionally slammed into the brawlers. So you see right next to us, we are live at steward middle magnet. This is their Flight Simulator classroom. Thats really cool. But you think middle school and these students have the opportunity to learn some of these skills and to learn more about that profession, what they can do down the road, its really cool. I checked out the Flight Simulator yesterday. Its part of a unique program. Imagine taking, in addition to that, additional science classes. They are doing different classes. Its part of a really cool program. Check it out. Reporter the energy and environmental class is focused on teaching students how things work. All the different s energy. How can we put those energies together for alternative sources of energy . So well look at solar ovens, wind turbines, that kind of thing, and building those things. Its a handon course. Reporter its an area along the Hillsborough River alongside steward middle. They test the Water Quality, clean of area of litter, place informational signs, and observe wildlife. What were learning in our class, and we can just come out of it. Reporter these students offer a learning opportunity for others that visit their Living Laboratory. We painted the sidewalk. While people are walking and enjoying the view of the river, they can learn about water and how water is really important. A lot of handson projects culminating in the paintings we do on a the sidewalk. Kind of a fun way to put the steam in our s. T. E. M. Class. Reporter with the expectation. Palm trees, they have nurtured it for the past six years. They continually check the Water Quality of the river. This week they compared results from samples from september. My kids know the water circulates around the world. So what happens here impacts all of humanity. Water is a big part of the environment. If our trees are like messed up, then they could affect the water. If it affects the water, it can affect the Drinking Water that we have. All right. Curriculum, students compared the Water Quality of the Hillsborough River near steward now with the james river back when the colonies were in jamestown. This is really interesting. Both rivers are brakish. The students took a History Lesson from this. They took it to the Living Laboratory to do a comparison. Smart kids. Yeah. You were talking about the water and how those students are checking the water. Some of the administrators are going all the way to europe and they will be bringing back water samples to test. I know most kids go back to visit after high school, but your middle schoolers come back . They do. We have middle schoolers who, they have gone on to high school and college. They do tutoring here. They come back and talk about their new job as engineers at nasa, as lawyers. Its a fabulous place. And we and they come back every week and volunteer as well. Reporter that is awesome.
