reporter: at linkedin head quarters, employees celebrated with smoothies and krispy kreme donuts. overnight, this company was worth $8 million, turning some of the private investors into multimillionaires. >> a great time to be looking for money. not only institutional money, it is the public. and when those two entities are aligned good things happen. >> reporter: linkedin is the first of the privately held social network companies to go private. waiting in the wings are facebook and twitter. neither has indicated when it will be their turn but linkedin has indicated their time could be near. >> these are valuable companies, making cash, you know, they have strong business models. we are at a stage now, social media is maturing, i guess. >> reporter: it gives hope to the plethora of startups that hope to achieve the same subbases. kevin fong is a veteran silicon valley venture capitalist. >> there is a lot of great companies that have been hidden for a long time that are actually doing quite well in the traditional area of silly done valley. >> reporter: or could this be another bubble in the making that could burst later? analysts say linkedin is profitable. its strong initial public offering allows the early investors to cash out. the company has a lot of money now. it plans to forego a product to invest more heavily in technology and development. david louie, abc 7 news. linkedin helped lift the market. the dow jones rose 45 points. the nasdaq added 8 and the s&p 500 up almost three. transportation secretary are ray lahood came to the bay area. after meeting with with tamlies of the victims of the san bruno peopleline disaster he is promising to revamp the nation's pipeline system. >> reporter: transportation secretary ray lahood and cynthia quarterman came to san bruno, invited by representative jackie spear to see the crater created by the explosion and the empty lots where 38 homes once stood and 8 ople died. >> some things we can do administratively and we will work with the congress woman and a couple of senators that have introduced a good bill. >> reporter: after that, the pg&e president led a tour of a gas distribution replacement project where 8-inch cast iron pipes from the 1940s are being replaced with polyethylene pipes. it was not the media was not allowed to see, a meeting with the survivors of the explosion that is most important to lahood. >> i don't recall another time in my 35 years of public service when i have ever felt as sad as i do today. >> reporter: the ntsb report on the probable cause of the pipe rupture is expected in august, the same time that lahood has promised new regulations tightening up pipeline safety. >> we need to fix america's pipeline system. >> reporter: lahood said he is doing what he can to push through new legislation including a bill authored by spear. >> public officials entrusted with the responsibility to protect our community can never forget the lives lost, the lives scared, and the town ravaged. >> reporter: the mayor said that until today he was afraid that the san bruno is a disaster might be foregotten. >> migrator fear is that the hole gets filled and the road gets paveed and people come up to fee in a few years and say did you have a fire. among the changes lahood is calling for an increase in the civil penalties for safety violations, increasing the number of safety professionals monitoring the system and closing the loophole used to evade regularring lakes. heather ishimaru, abc 7 news. crews spent the day working to clean up a fuel spill in the marina on the southern end of san francisco bay. the fuel is coming from an abandoned barge that apparently tilted in low tide. the coast guard says a kayaker spotted the sheen on the water and called it in. investigators determined the barge had 750-gallons of fuel onboard but they do not know exactly how much spilled into the water. 20 more leopard sharks turned up dead in the bay. this time the sharks were found along the shoreline in richardson bay near greenwood cove. they started appearing here two weeks ago as we were reporting back then. the richardson bay autobon and sanctuary sent us these pictures. this is the time of year when they enter shallow water to spawn but sanctuary officials have notice bizarre behavior in the sharks such as bumping into pilings and standing themselves on the rocks. hundreds have washed ashore. low salinity in the bay because of the heavy rain is being examined as one possible cause for this. tonight, oakland police say the double shooting that killed two people last night happened after they responded to information about a possible violent gang crime that was about to go down. it happened about 10:30 in the 3000 block of curran. abc 7's laura anthony has more. >> this don't make no sense. they didn't have to kill my baby like that. >> reporter: mary cobb jackson clutches a picture of her son as a young boy, trying to come to grips with the fact that her son was kill by oakland poce jt 24hoursgo. >> he didn't have no gun or nothing on him and it didn't make no sense. how did he find a -- how could he be shooting and the gun is on the roof? >> reporter: police released a statement saying fletcher antoine jackson and his unidentified companion emerged from a car with weapons and confronted police and that is when police said they had to use deadly force. >> reporter: police say they recovered two weapons from the scene. witnesses claim the weapons were found on a roof top wrapped in a clothe. >> no guns on neither one of the guys. only people that had guns were the police and they had guns to kill rifles. >> reporter: the police explained they received a tip that a violent crime was going to take place along the 3000 block of curran avenue. jackson was shot in the side, possibly while still inside the car. >> shot him in the car. the glass and everything is right there. >> reporter: margie turner says her 30-year-old nephew was on parole for nonviolent offenses. >> something has to be done about this. you can't keep paying these folks that are supposed to be protecting us and they are killing us. it's not right. >> we got to watch out for oakland police. it is crazy out here. oakland police, they are not helping us, they're killing us. >> reporter: police confirm this afternoon that federal investigators were on the scene shortly after the shooting but police would not tell us what role, if any, the feds had in the events leading up to the shooting. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. a gilroy man may end up spending the rest of life in prison for killing his girlfriend's puppy. bud ruiz was charged with battery and animal cruelty for throwing a 6 week old chihuahua across the room during an argument. he could get a life sentence under the california three strikes law. senate republicans blocked the nomination of goodwin liu. the first time one of the president's judicial nominees has been defeated. he was nominated to a seat on the fran-based 9th circuit court of appeals. he supports same-sex marriage and affirmative action and also slammed conservative supreme court justices. this has polarized both sides. >> the record is clear, any claims that goodwinliu is anything but deserving of the confirmation is inaccurate. >> do we want people who have a reverence of the u.s. constitution and believe it means what it says or want people on our courts that care more about advancing an ideaology that is antito the constitution than they do final arguments in the chauncey bailey murder trial and said that they failed to prove that yusuf bey ordered the hit. here is cecilia vega. >> reporter: the leader of your black muslim bakery had no lycyon to order chaunly bailey's assassination. he said the bankruptcy was public record. allegations that yusuf bey senior molested minors is old news. but the lawyer told the jury it is not a significant motive or a secret that yusuf didn't like mr. bailey. bailey ms brother calls the case a slam dunk. >> i understand everybody has a right to defense but it is ridiculous. >> he says they tried to victimize him by showing a secret recording bey laughs about bailey being shot in the head. all that really matters the lawyers say is the testimony of devaughndre broussard. in a plea deal, broussard will serve 25 years in exchange for his testimony against his friends. prosecutor ma told ju railroads to say the man got a deal, he did. but sometimes you got to make a deal with the demon to get to the devil. outside, they couldn't say why he may have wanted bailey dead. >> who knows why he did it. i don't know if he did it because he thought it was going to be something that would score him some points. >> bailey's family wants justice to be served. >> everybody has a mother and so, you know, even bey. i spoke to bey's mother and she is a nice lady and that is her son regardless. everybody is affected. >> reporter: the jury could begin deliberations next week. cecilia vega, abc 7 news. construction crews finished installing a major piece of the eastern span of the bay bridge this evening. they started lifting it very slowly at 7:00 this morning to the top of the suspension tower. engineers call it a cable saddle. the saddle weighs 450-tons. the bridge's steel tables will rest on the saddle. the cables will support the roadways that run along both sides of this new tower. now, this job was so difficult crews actually rehearsed it last month on land. another construction related item. people who live and work near the embarcadero in san francisco felt a lot of shaking today. the vibrations were caused bay giant crane that drove four sets of massive steel pilings to the foot of pier 15. part of the construction project for the new exploratorium. >> we thought it was a mini earthquake. >> the piles actually separating the pier from the land so it will be stable if there is an earthquake and it is not coupled to the shaking of the land. really an important event for stablizing the new building. >> each piling stretches 140 feet and will be driven into the sea floor to a depth of 120 feet. that is a lot of pounding to get that down that deep. and we are pretty close to that and a lot of people first here thought earthquake. thankfully, no. with terrific waves for the surfers. the state assembly today unanimously approved legislation making it easier for nonprofits to take over california parks. is in response to last week's announcement that budget cuts with force the state to close 70 of california's 270 parks, beaches and historic areas as of july 2012. a year from this july. park officials said they would seek public and private partnerships to keep some open. at ocean beach today, more than 500 enthusiastic elementary school students from san francisco and marin county came for the kids adopt a beach cleanup. they picked up every piece of trash they could spot, focusing on the little scraps that birds and fish can mistake for food. after the cleanup the kids got together to ail range themselves in the shape of a giant would have seen rob as a personal superman. it gives incredible hope to that. >> for rob, it is one small step at a time. >> doctors in houston are encouraged by the way wounded congress woman gabriel giffords is responding. doctors planted a piece of plastic into her skull and it means she can stop wearing the protective helmet on her head. her husband spoke this morning on the updates he has received. >> she is doing well. everything went as planned. her neurosurgeons are happy and she is recuperating and getting back to therapy today. it went really, really well. >> meanwhile, "endeavour" astronauts today accomplished the number one mission objective they have up there. attached a cosmic ray detector to the space station. that will study so-called dark matter across the universe. former international monetary fund chief will likely be released from jail tomorrow. he was indicted today on seven felony counts including a first-degree criminal sexual act and attempted rape of a hotel maid. the judge set bail at $1 million. he must also wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and remain confined to a new york city apartment. evidence including hotel key card records and security cameras support the maid's claim of being in the room at the time with strauss khan for perhaps as long as 15 minutes. it has been 30 years since the tylenol scare ripped the nation. the cyanide tampering of the bottles was deadly. tonight we learned of a major development. fbi investigators are looking to a possible link to ted kaczinski, the una bomber. >> it was a national nightmare, someone was lacing tylenol with cyanide. seven people murdered in chicago in the fall of 1982. >> cyanide containing tylenol. >> this may be contaminated with cyanide and should be destroy. >> it dominated headlines. >> a nationwide search is underway to find the man wanted for questioning in the tylenol murders. >> a case that literally changed the way americans shopped. it prompted the first mass recall of a retail product, tamperproof medicine is now a fact of life. three decades later the case remains unsolved. now, a shot in the dark. the una bomber terrorized the country for 18 years, injuring 23 people and killing three he in a series of mail bombings. it is a turns out, kaczinski grew up in the chicago area where the tylenol attacks happened. sources tell abc news given his ties to the region the fbi requested a sample of his dna to compare to evidence recovered in the case. so how did we find out about this? the government planned an online auction to sell items from the una bomber's montana home. the type writer used to write the manifesto. he has defiantly objected to the sale, filing a hand written motion asking a federal judge to block it. >> in e moon h revealed the government's request for dna. kaczinski says he is innocent but is trying to strike a bargain saying he will give dna if the auction is stopped. the fbi says no deal and they will seek a court order to force him to give up a dna sample. how about this, food stamps for millionaires. michigan man underfire for continuing to accept food stamps after winning $2 million in the state lottery. under the guidelines eligibility is based on the gross income. lottery winnings are considered liquid assets so they don't come. as long as his income stays below the eligibility requirement he can continue to receive taxpayer aid. the department of human services was notified about the jackpot and that is all the law required. there appears to be ample appetite for discount grocers in the south bay. the berkeley based company says it will open 15 more this year, 40h hiring between 30 to 40 employees. also, silicon valley tech companies recruiting the class of 2011. dozens of companies are hiring graduates. certainly helps if you have a degree in engineering or business. one of america's most honored preschools is coming to the silicon valley in 2012. the goddard school is negotiating for a site in san jose. tuition costs as much as $1,400 per month so it is not inexpensive. apple is expected to launch a new product to celebrate the retail store's 10th anniversary this weekend. and right now the buzz is that it could be the icloud. they have already signed at least one huge music label and are close to signing the other ones. people could store music in servers online, not just on your gad get in your happened. a tomb of british neuroscientists say that apple is a religion. photos light up the brains of fans and they respond the same way that religious disasters. flood waters continue to run through and over levees along the mississippi river. millions of acres are farmland are flooded and may be lost forever. >> reporter: this is the frontline of the flooding yolks. you can literally see the destruction in progress. this is the soybean field and this is the rest of the crop completely underwater, sub merged and now destroyed. all the way up the mississippi to illinois there are over 2 million acres of farmland completely destroyed by the flooding. in this area they expect another two to three feet in the next few days. there are communities that are bracing for flooding, hoping that it takes its time but knowing that at some point it will come. meanwhile, take a look at what what some flood stricken residents have done to protect houses and livelihoods. these are homes in vicksburg. they are all situated along a tributary of the overflowing mississippi river. the owners have surrounded themselves with tons of earth and
