Bullet. They say if those tanks had more ethanol in them this couldve been much worse. I was step out of the way so you can see we are. We are at the front gates of this facility and there are a lot of people out here assessing the scene. Right now they are in the cleanup process of this situation. Cal oshas is prohibiting use of the facility and nustar said last night all operations and shipments are stopped for now. We dont know when the facility will be up and running. An Assessment Team has been here for hours touring the facility but still no word on the cause. The contra costa Fire Protection district held another News Conference with an update from the scene. As we know, two tanks containing 252,000 gallons of ethanol in total were destroyed in the fire at Nustar PetroleumStorage Facility in crockett. The remainder of the ethanol is being held by berms around the tank sites but we are told the liquid is largely a mixer of water and foam at this point. The teams here plan to remove the material in both containment structures. That will happen in the next 3 4 hours and that we use tanks to suck up the liquid. As for the other tanks there was a concern that they were damaged by the fire. The team on the scene can now say they are all safe but the ventilation systems were affected. One is they are going to vent those adjacent tanks. Normally those tanks have an emissions capture system on them kind of like what we are familiar at a gas station where the vapors are returned back to the tank. That system has been compromised because of the fire and so they are venting those individual tanks to relieve pressure and eliminate any risk whatsoever of any fire. Reporter cal osha is on site. In a statement a spokesperson with the California Department of industrial relations said , quote, cal osha issued an order to preserve the two tanks and pipes involved in the fire and issued an order to prohibit use of the facility until we can confirm that operations can continue safely. A nustar spokesperson sent a statement that said , quote, there were two impacted tanks which were holding low volumes of ethanol, less than 1 of tank capacity are less than 3000 barrels each. As for the origin of the project and the tanks it was a mix of domestic and international ethanol. A firefighter was hurt overnight. The injuries were minor and related to the fire but we dont do not know details. We know he was treated and released. An interesting note. Firefighters have been using phone on the site to avoid another flareup but last night they ran out of foam and had to put in an emergency order for more. We are told they have enough now to handle the situation. The most important thing to take away is officials tell us there is no ongoing safety risk. Sara zendehnam, ktvu fox 2 news.
