Investigation into City of Las Cruces finds $1.7M in public money mishandled

The city's Convention and Visitor's Bureau, branded as Visit Las Cruces, has its headquarters at the southern gateway to downtown Las Cruces on the corner of S. Main and E. Amador Avenue.
LAS CRUCES – A forensic investigation into the handling of public funds at the city states, "there is probable cause to believe that criminal violations have occurred," involving the city's former economic development director, a former city manager and a prominent local restaurateur.
Investigators with the Albuquerque-based McHard Firm worked over 11 months to reconstruct transactions involving the Las Cruces Convention and Visitors Bureau, also known as Visit Las Cruces, the Las Cruces Country Music Festival and a now-defunct nonprofit allegedly used to steer public funds toward vendors, evading procurement rules and skirting the attention of city officials.
