After more than six months since police shot and killed a man in Newton Highlands, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced the incident will be “referred to an inquest.”
A spokesperson for DA Marian Ryan did not return requests for further information on the inquest.
Three Newton police officers and one sergeant were initially placed on leave after the incident that left resident Michael Conlon dead. Interim Chief Howard Mintz allowed one officer to return to full duty on April 27. As of July 21, new Chief John Carmichael said the other three remain on leave.
Conlon, 28, was shot and killed on Jan. 5 after Newton and state police officers went to a store in response to a 911 call about a man, later identified as Conlon, armed with a knife, according to an initial press release from DA Marian Ryan. The officers and a state trooper initially used “less-than-lethal” weapons to subdue Conlon, including a beanbag shotgun and a Taser, but neither worked, the DA said.
