Mayor Ravi Bhalla announced substantial improvements in three of Hoboken’s Vision Zero safety categories. From 2019 to 2020, Hoboken saw a 35 percent decrease in pedestrians struck by vehicles, an 11 percent decrease in cyclists struck by vehicles, and a 27 percent decrease in vehicle-on-vehicle crashes, according to an analysis of crash reports by members of the traffic division of the Hoboken Police Department. Thirty-five pedestrians were struck by a vehicle in 2020 compared to 54 in 2019, 31 cyclists were struck by a vehicle in 2020 compared to 35 in 2019, and 1,027 vehicles were struck by another vehicle in 2020 compared to 1,410 in 2019. ....

In a letter to residents, Union City Mayor and State Senator Brian Stack has reiterated his support for curbing the heights of buildings below the Palisades Cliffs. “I am writing to you concerning the protection of the views that our community enjoys of the Hudson River and New York City skyline,” Stack said. “If you visit Firefighters Memorial Park on 9th Street and Palisade Avenue, Washington Park, or live in Union City, you know the views of New York City and the Hudson River are amazing.” ....

Hoboken police detectives are investigating a bias incident after a member of the public sent a “disturbing” and racially offensive message to panelists at the Hoboken City Council meeting. An unidentified individual calling themselves “iPhone 7” logged into the March 3 council meeting held on Zoom. Then during the meeting, at 8:21 p.m., he or she sent the N-word repeatedly to panelists privately, away from public view. ....
