The student-athletes and coaches stayed as safe and healthy as possible under unprecedented circumstances (can we retire that phrase soon?). And now, we’ve arrived at May Madness. Choosing the 29-team field involved some unprecedented (sorry) discussions. The Big Ten only played conference opponents. Some teams played 11 or 12 games while others got in 16 or more. And the bracket isn’t without controversy (Duke at No. 7? No Penn State?). But that’s all pundit-speak. Over the next three weekends, teams will settle scores between the lines. Here’s (half of) what to watch for this weekend. ....

CAMRON WANG/THE STATESMAN Graduate midfielder Ally Kennedy already owned a reputation of being one of the best lacrosse players in the world when she was named US Lacrosse’s Preseason Player of the Year. On Saturday, April 3, she reminded everyone of that with seven goals tying her career high in the No. 6-ranked Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team’s 19-8 destruction of the Vermont Catamounts in Burlington. The victory was the Seawolves’ seventh straight, improving their record to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Stony Brook’s two losses remain against the top two ranked teams in the country. ....
SARA RUBERG/THE STATESMAN After their tough loss to the No. 2-ranked Syracuse Orange, the Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team headed south to Baltimore for its first America East game since 2019. In their conference opener, the Seawolves defeated the UMBC Retrievers 15-8, improving to a staggering 43 straight wins against America East opponents. The game was in the Seawolves’ hands from the beginning, punching UMBC in the mouth with six straight goals in only three minutes. Graduate attacker Taryn Ohlmiller found the net twice in 42 seconds en route to a team-high five goals on the day. Graduate midfielder Ally Kennedy also added onto the scoring with a hat trick. ....
