Pickel s penalty flips momentum as Stony Brook men s lacrosse eliminated in semis by Vermont – The Statesman

ETHAN TAM/THE STATESMAN The Stony Brook men’s lacrosse team was up 5-2 at the half, playing well as a unit and inspiring confidence in their ability to pull through when they needed to. However, as has been the story all season, the Seawolves were unable to put it together down the stretch and lost to the second-seeded Vermont Catamounts by a final score of 10-7 in the America East semifinals on Thursday, May 6.  As a result of a two-minute non-releasable penalty that forced the Seawolves to play with a man down, Stony Brook allowed three goals in just over a minute at the end of the third quarter, completely changing the momentum of a contest that the Seawolves had controlled up to that point.

It’ll be facing the Vermont Catamounts (9-4), the winners of the America East title. Tim Leonard, Chair of the NCAA DI Men’s Lacrosse Committee, said Sunday night that No. 1 seed North Carolina (11-2) and No. 2 seed Duke (12-2) received higher seedings than the Terps because both teams faced tougher schedules. “Whether we were 1, 2, 3 or unseeded, we just got to make sure that we are appreciative of the opportunity to play,” head coach John Tillman said, “we get to play a home game, we get another week together. And that’s really what I’m most thankful for.“

Vermont Uses Big Second Half to Capture First-Ever America East Title

Published on (Photo Courtesy of Vermont Athletics) After falling in three of the past four America East title games (2016, 2018, 2019) the Vermont Catamounts have finally gotten over the hump and are NCAA Tournament bound for the first time in program history, taking down UAlbany 15-10 to capture that first-ever conference title and NCAA Tournament berth. Following a back-and-forth first half which saw the Catamounts take a narrow 8-7 lead after two goals from Thomas McConvey and Tommy Burke within the final 13 seconds of the half, Vermont stepped on the gas in the third quarter and din’t let up until the final buzzer sounded. The Catamounts put in three straight, including two from Liam Limoges, to start the third, extend their run to five, and take a 12-7 lead.
