The Hamilton Club at Duke and Orange streets in Lancaster, formerly the Catherine Long mansion, was designed by architect James H. Warner and built in 1890 in the chateauesque style. It has cast stone high-relief panels above entrance.

LNP | LancasterOnline columnist to give history talk about James Warner, 'Lancaster's Forgotten Architect' | Home & Garden


Gregory J. Scott, the architect who writes the monthly column “Design Intervention” for LNP | LancasterOnline, will present a talk on “Lancaster’s Forgotten Architect: James Warner” next week.
The talk, part of LancasterHistory’s spring lecture series, can be viewed via Zoom at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 11.
Lancaster is filled with examples of the work of the London-born Warner, who lived from 1865 to 1913.
Warner came to the United States at age 19, first settling in Harrisburg and then moving to Lancaster at age 24. He immediately won the commission to design Lancaster’s Central Market building.
As a young man, Warner also was chosen to design such local buildings as the Catherine Long Mansion (now the Hamilton Club), the old library building at what is now Millersville University, St. John’s Lutheran Church, South Duke Street and South Mulberry Street schools and major mansions for wealthy Lancaster families. ....

Virtual LancasterHistory: Presidential mansion tour, Valentine gala, speakers on Thaddeus Stevens and more


LancasterHistory and James Buchanan’s Wheatland may remain closed to visitors because of the pandemic. But the local history organization still has a full schedule of events to offer the public between now and May.
Presentations about Thaddeus Stevens, controversial monuments and Lancaster architecture, along with a Valentine’s Day fundraising gala and a special Presidents Day tour of Wheatland, are among the history organization’s upcoming virtual offerings.

On Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 15, visitors can not only take a virtual guided tour, via Zoom, of James Buchanan’s home, but can eavesdrop on a conversation between the nation’s 15th president and a close friend from the Roosevelt family, says Patrick Clarke, director of Wheatland. ....
