Newly appointed Cocoa police chief Evander Collier speaks to public

In a packed City Hall Wednesday evening, Cocoa welcomed its new chief of police and the first Black head of the department, former Jacksonville Sheriff s Office lieutenant Evander Collier IV.
Collier spoke to the public and media about his excitement to join the agency of a combined 110 sworn officers and civilian employees.
“I’m really thrilled to death. I’ve prepared my entire career as a law enforcement officer for a day like today. With the goal of one day of leading an agency like that in Cocoa, Collier said.
“The more I ve talked to people in the community, I get more and more excited about this opportunity. The people here in Cocoa really care about the city, he added. ....

The formal announcement from the city manager’s office is expected later in the day, but Thursday evening, several city councilmembers took to social media to offer congratulations to the 24-year veteran of law enforcement.

Collier, who left the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in June 2020, is also set to make history, becoming the first Black police chief of a municipality in Brevard County.
“Evander Collier’s selection is a great day for the city of Cocoa,” City Councilmember Alex Goins said Thursday night. “Thanks to awesome leadership from City Manager Stockton Whitten, city staff, and the City Council-appointed Chief Selection Committee for their thorough and transparent process. Cynthia Green stood alone before the podium and wept openly before Cocoa City Council, pleading for justice and answers in her son s killing by a Brevard County Sheriff s deputy during a traffic stop last November.
Green s emotional appeal Tuesday night prompted City Council to unanimously agree to draft a letter to State Attorney Phil Archer about the Nov. 13 case, which he continues to review to decide whether the deputy s use of force was justified.
I don t know what else to do, Green said as council members listened to her anguished appeal for help. I was born and raised in Cocoa, this is my home . my son lived here all his life and he gets no kind of justice. ....
