A brave and special young man living in our community may soon have some wishes fulfilled, but more help is needed to give this youngster the life he deserves.
Colten Cain, a 5-year-old from the Nixville area, has captured the hearts of the medical teams working with him, despite his many physical, cognitive and communicative challenges.
“I have treated Colten since August 2019 and remain amazed by the progress he makes daily,” said Mandy Freeman Keen, the primary speech language pathologist working with Colten, who is nonverbal.
“Colten has overcome many obstacles in his short life that others only hope to accomplish by their elder years. He is a true warrior! The Barbara Stone Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on supporting visionary and creative programs and initiatives for individuals with disabilities, gave four grants totaling $25,500 to Upstate non-profits in November 2020.
Since 1991, the Barbara Stone Foundation has supported organizations in Greenville County that are committed to helping individuals with disabilities thrive through innovative programming.
The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind Foundation received a $5,000 grant for their Freedom to Play project, which is repurposing an old tennis court on the school’s Spartanburg property to give students with mobility challenges a safe place to ride bicycles, run, walk and play.

COLUMBIA, S.C. On Monday, the S.C. Department of Education (SCDE) announced that it will provide $84,264,890 in additional federal Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) funding to all public schools districts and special schools to support reopening efforts.
The funding can be used for four specific purposes, including safety measures and personal protective equipment, hiring of school nurses, hiring of staff to provide one-on-one instruction and support services for struggling students, and technology equipment to support online learning.
