A plan to remake a shuttered golf course in Carmel Mountain is gearing up to go back before city planners after two years of opposition.
Santa Monica developer New Urban West says it will bring the 1,200-home Trails at Carmel Mountain Ranch to the San Diego Planning Commission in July. The project has been significantly scaled back since it was originally envisioned as a 1,600 home project, but neighbors still say it is too dense.
Despite a regional and statewide push for housing in California, many local developers have elected to scale back the size of projects to get community support. But, it hasn’t made much of a difference to neighbors who say The Trails is too big for the area. ....

The first homes at San Diego’s newest residential community haven’t even been built yet but the interest list is growing by the minute.
3Roots in Mira Mesa plans to build 1,800 homes by 2025 to 2026. Just 200 homes are anticipated to open this year, but the interest list is at more than 14,000 people and expected to keep growing before pre-sales start in June.
The developers have a gold-plated problem who gets to buy? At the moment, they say they are still trying to figure that out. New home builders across San Diego County have relied on lotteries or very long wait times for a home after an initial deposit to select residents. Would-be buyers at 3Roots don’t seem concerned about the development’s prices, ....

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. As a waiter who had been laid off four times during the pandemic, Carmen Lucci couldn’t afford a COVID-19 test. But he couldn’t afford to go without it, either.
The La Mesa resident was exposed to COVID-19 in October, and his employer demanded a negative test before his upcoming shift or a two-week quarantine.
Lucci spent $195 on a rapid test at Covid Clinic, a startup from Orange County that now operates in 10 states. He estimates it took him three or four days of work to earn the money back. ....
