Recent studies show a route through Crest Canyon is the highest rated of five potential choices for a railroad tunnel that would take the railroad tracks off the eroding coastal bluffs in Del Mar.
Other possible underground routes include one along Interstate 5, one beneath the street of Camino Del Mar though the city of Del Mar, and two more through Crest Canyon, according to a conceptual analysis by the San Diego Association of Governments and its consultants.
SANDAG, North County Transit District and other local agencies have talked for years about moving the tracks off the bluffs, but only recently have the agencies received grant money for the preliminary studies required. Construction alone is expected to cost $3 billion or more.

A new plan aims to slowly transform car-centric El Cajon Boulevard into a series of pedestrian-friendly neighborhood hubs with mid-rise housing, restaurants, urban plazas, parks, art displays and event spaces.
Called BLVD 2020, the plan says there is potential to create a regional destination and a thriving cultural hub on the four-mile roadway, which passes through University Heights, North Park, Normal Heights, Kensington, Talmadge and City Heights.
More than a fifth of San Diego residents live within 5 miles of El Cajon Boulevard, including many in the city’s most ethnically distinct neighborhoods such as Little Saigon and many areas of City Heights.
Fresh Paint Gallery in La Jolla is hosting “Radical Inclusion,” featuring the works of autistic artist Katie Flores and her mentor, Amanda Saint Claire, through Tuesday, April 27.

The incident caused SANDAG to suspend rail service temporarily over concerns of further collapse. Later, geotechnical experts determined that train service can be operated safely at a reduced speed, according to the City of Del Mar. Steel beams are being used to support bluffs underneath coastal train tracks to prevent erosion. NBC 7 s Joe Little has more on the bluff stabilization project.
But beachgoers were still warned to avoid sitting, standing or walking within 50 feet of the bluffs on the beach below due to cracks at the top of the bluffs that posed a risk.
The cliffs are increasingly threatened by coastal erosion. SANDAG s work includes drilling holes into the bluffs, placing anchors and filling the holes with concrete.
