United board awaits election results


ALEXIS United School Board members met April 8 and approved the amended agenda.
“The amended agenda is due to the unknown results of Tuesday’s school board election,” said Superintendent Jeff Whitsitt, “Warren County has the largest voting body of the four counties that United lies in. Some 90 absentee ballots were issued in Warren County and all have not been returned.  Four winners will be named by April 20th or when enough mail-in ballots have been returned to designate the winners.”
Whitsitt then recognized the outgoing board members. Aaron Leary, who served on the board for six years, received a “U Made A Difference” plaque. Debbie Meeker-King was the initial recipient of a “U Rock” Award. She served on the Alexis and United school boards for 20 years. ....

Student government diversity cabinet holds diversity, equity, & inclusion panel in honor of Dr. Sheila Pressley


Eastern Kentucky University’s Diversity Cabinet in the Student Government Association hosted a panel that was centered around diversity, equity and inclusion on April 7. 
It was named after Dr. Sheila Pressley, who passed in January of 2020 at the age of 53. Dr. Pressley made a lasting impact at Eastern, as she was the dean of health sciences and always made an effort to push for diversity in all facets on campus, especially in upper management. 
The event was hosted by SGA director of diversity Britany Bowens. It was opened by Bowens introducing student body president Eyouel G. Mekonnen as he talked about the fight for diversity everywhere. Mekonnen said, “What matters most is what happens after this conversation. What matters in significance is what is actionable.” ....

United school board discusses graduation

MONMOUTH United school board members discussed possible graduation dates at their meeting Thursday in the high school commons.
Commencement is tentatively set for 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, with an outdoor ceremony. Board members discussed a May 15 ceremony with a rain date of the 16th and a May 16 ceremony with a rain date of the 17th. Members of the senior class and their parents are being surveyed as to their preferences.
The board received copies of a new state policy on the use of educational technologies and student data privacy and security. This is the first reading for the policy.  The issue will be brought up at the April meeting for a second reading or approval. The policy was written by the Illinois School Board Association. ....

Alexis board supports tourism program

ALEXIS  The Alexis Village Board this week expressed its support for Mercer County’s “side-by-side” tourism program, MerCo Trails.
Following discussion during the regular board meeting Monday, trustees approved a resolution to issue a letter of support for the effort to promote utility vehicle tourism in Mercer County.
In a telephone interview Thursday, Mercer County Economic Development Director Kasi Hinshaw explained the side-by-side program. Participants will pay an annual fee to Visit MerCo for a registration sticker that will allow them to operate UTVs on designated roads in the county (the MerCo Trails system). UTVs are small off-road/on-road vehicles. Stickers cost $50 for Mercer County residents, $75 for non-residents. ....
