Niemerg backs bills to ditch mask mandates in Illinois schools and House floor

(The Center Square) – State Rep. Adam Niemerg said Wednesday he plans to introduce a bill that would do away with face masks in the Illinois House and in schools, which drew immediate criticism from some lawmakers even though it has yet to be assigned a bill number.
“We are standing in a chamber today, where every single one of us has had the opportunity to have the COIVD-19 vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine is more than 90% effective in fighting COVID-19. So why are we here wearing masks pretending that there’s a risk when there is little to no risk? The answer is: We should not. What message are we sending?” Niemerg said during a point of personal privilege. “If the vaccine is really effective and we want people to take the vaccine, then what are we doing in this chamber wearing masks?” ....

United school board discusses graduation

MONMOUTH United school board members discussed possible graduation dates at their meeting Thursday in the high school commons.
Commencement is tentatively set for 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, with an outdoor ceremony. Board members discussed a May 15 ceremony with a rain date of the 16th and a May 16 ceremony with a rain date of the 17th. Members of the senior class and their parents are being surveyed as to their preferences.
The board received copies of a new state policy on the use of educational technologies and student data privacy and security. This is the first reading for the policy. The issue will be brought up at the April meeting for a second reading or approval. The policy was written by the Illinois School Board Association. ....
