Progressive lawmakers and residents are expressing disappointment after a resolution in support of national police reform died in a council committee in Akron. Offered by Councilwoman Tara Samples, the resolution urging the U.S. Senate to pass H.R.1280 (the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021) was allowed a week of consideration in the public safety committee before receiving less than the three votes needed to advance to a full vote Monday night. The committee, chaired by Councilman Donnie Kammer, agreed to take time last week to review the 138-page national police reform bill, first introduced in Congress weeks after a Minneapolis police officer murdered Floyd last year. ....
With Akron set to receive $153 million from the federal American Rescue Plan by next summer, City Council is ready to pony up whatever it takes to curb gun violence. Public Safety Chair Donnie Kammer invited Charles Brown, Akron s deputy mayor for public safety, as well as the highest-ranking officers in the Akron Police Department to brief lawmakers on current gun violence reduction efforts and what more is needed. “For right now, this is a start,” said Kammer, who told public safety officials to come back in six weeks with a “wish list” of demands that need Council s budgetary approval. “I’m scared to even think about what happens in six weeks when we reconvene, because we’ll be a couple weeks off of the Fourth of July and these individuals [committing gun crimes] just don’t care,” said Councilwoman Tara Samples. ....

Nearly 45 acres that the city of Akron owns and has up for bid on Theiss Road in the Merriman Valley could become part of nearby Hampton Hills Metro Park if the Western Reserve Land Conservancy s (WRLC) new bid to purchase the site wins the day. The conservancy, which submitted a revised bid of $410,000 for the land on March 30, told the city that if the group is allowed to purchase the property it intends to turn the site over to Summit Metro Parks. ....
Police say footage shared during the news conference shows Turnure s shin not his knee pinning Hicks shoulder, not his neck. The footage shows an officer identified by supervisors as Turnure repeatedly shoving snow into Hicks open mouth. Afterward, Hicks says, I really can t breathe. Hicks did not comply with officers; the footage released during the news conference did not show his initial interaction with police. Ward 5 Councilwoman Tara Samples called the news conference damage control. The bottom line is, just release the footage, she said Thursday morning, before the press conference was scheduled. The allegations made by Mr. Hicks are deeply disturbing, especially in light of the officer s resignation, Ward 8 Councilman Shammas Malik said Thursday morning. We all need to see the body camera footage immediately. ....
