The City Council has approved a cap on the fees that food delivery app companies can charge restaurants. Local restaurant owners say that some of the delivery fees are higher than the profits from the actual meals.

(TNS) Akron City Council unanimously approved a 15% cap on the fees that companies like DoorDash, GrubHub and Uber charge restaurants.
Council heard last week from two restaurants and a representative of the Ohio Restaurant Association who said the tech companies charge restaurants as much as 30% of the bill to deliver food while discouraging their clients from raising prices. With consumer demand for delivery spiking in the pandemic, restaurants owners say the delivery fees can be greater than the profits on some of their meals. ....

AKRON, Ohio – One year after Summit County began foreclosure proceedings against Chapel Hill Mall, the city of Akron is moving forward with plans to rezone the property with the hope developers can repurpose the mostly vacant structure and expansive parking lot.
City Council on Monday considered a zoning change for the mall at 2000 Brittain Road to go from a “retail business use district,” allowing for retail and residential use, to be a “unified planned development district,” which expands the zoning to also allow for some commercial use. ....

Sykes condemns 'attempted coup.' Leaders outraged by pro-Trump riot

Northeast Ohio lawmakers condemned rioters supporting President Donald Trump after they breached the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday and stopped the certification of the presidential election.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine called the scene an embarrassment, while local elected officials described the riot as a stain on America s history.
Others, like state Rep. and Minority Leader Emilia Sykes, a Democrat from Akron, were more blunt.
“The attempted coup at the U.S. Capitol by terrorists is the direct result of Republicans undermining the very democratic institutions and principles that they were elected to and swore to protect and uphold, Sykes said in a written statement. ....

Police reforms delayed a month as Akron City Council finishes report

Still sifting through what they ve learned in 21 meetings since mid-September, Akron City Council has shifted a deadline to release a list of policing recommendations into the new year.
The recommendations, which would include what council can do to help police, were originally expected Monday from the special committee on Reimagining Public Safety created by President Margo Sommerville as tensions flared nationally this summer between police and communities of color.
The special committee broke into four sub-groups to learn about policing issues related to crime prevention; technology; personnel and culture; and accountability and transparency. Sommerville thanked Councilman Shammas Malik of Ward 8 for facilitating many of those meetings and arranging testimonies and interviews with police experts and community advocates from Akron to Detroit and as far away as California. ....
