Akron's Updated Housing Strategy to Focus on 'Middle Neighborhoods'

Sections in four of Akron s 22 neighborhoods will be targeted by Planning to Grow Phase 2.0 : the middle thirds of both Goodyear Heights and North Hill, plus the northeast corner of Kenmore, and the area south of Schneider Park in West Akron.
In 2017, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan announced Planning to Grow, an initiative to bring the city s population to 250,000 people adding 50,000 residents by the year 2050. The plan provided property tax abatements, which spurred new housing construction and home rehab projects in parts of the city.
Now, he’s announced phase two, which will encourage investment into what city officials term “middle neighborhoods”: places like Goodyear Heights, North Hill, and Kenmore. ....

AKRON, Ohio – Akron’s proposal to bar landlords from discriminating against tenants based on their lawful source of income could make housing accessible for hundreds of Summit County families who have a housing voucher but can’t find a unit, the housing authority told City Council on Monday.
At any given time, about 350 to 650 people with a Housing Choice voucher are looking for housing in the Akron area, Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority Deputy Director Debbie Barry told the Housing and Neighborhood Assistance Committee. ....
