'Obsession with new homes will destroy our green spaces' councillor claims

A COUNCIL S ruling Labour group s obsession with housebuilding will destroy all the green space in its borough, a Liberal Democrat councillor has alleged.
Cllr Paul Browne made the accusation as Blackburn with Darwen Planning Committee approved a controversial homes development at the second time of asking.
Last month its granting of permission for the for 165 houses south of Whalley Old Road in Sunny Bower, Blackburn, had to be rescinded the following day after officials decided that residents and Conservative members claims it lacked a Minerals Resource Assessment were correct.
On Thursday the committee approved the scheme after the MRA said: There is no prospect of minerals ever being worked in the future on the application site.” ....

Blackburn with Darwen Tories tell council: stop building new homes

A COUNCIL should suspend approving new homes schemes, Conservatives have said.
Tory growth spokesman Cllr Paul Marrow and his predecessor Cllr Derek Hardman called for the moratorium at Blackburn with Darwen Borough s Council Forum on Thursday night.
They were concerned about over-development of green fields.
They also raised the revocation of a permission for 165 new homes on Whalley Old Road in Sunny Bower just hours after it was given.
Town hall bosses quashed the decision the day after it was approved by the planning committee on January 21 after officials concluded the meeting failed to have received a mineral resources assessment to consider. ....

Inspiring retired language teacher dies, aged 86

A ‘DEDICATED’ teacher whose teaching career spanned four decades has died aged 86.
Blackburn-raised Joan Robson (nèe Forshaw) passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Sunday, January 17.
Her son Dominic said: “We are just really proud of who she was. Not just as a really wonderful mum but also as really inspirational and brilliant teacher.
“Joan inspired her students to have high academic standards, a love of language learning and broadened horizons.”
Born on July 25, 1934 in Failsworth, Joan went to school at former Notre Dame Grammar School, Blackburn, on Whalley Old Road from 1945 to 1950.
She completed her final year of education at a school in Liverpool before becoming the first in her family to go to university, studying French language and literature at Liverpool University and the Sorbonne in Paris, graduating with a first class honours degree in French. ....

A COUNCIL has revoked the planning approval for controversial proposal to build 165 homes on a gateway site just hours after it was given.
Blackburn with Darwen Borough’s planning committee granted permission for scheme off Whalley Old Road in Sunny Bower on Thursday night after a bitter debate.
Council bosses were accused of putting ‘pocketing the cash’ ahead of residents interests and ignoring the need for a special report on mineral deposits below the land.
Councillors gave outline planning permission for the scheme on the way into Blackburn town centre despite objections from Stephen Atherton, from the Sunny Bower Community Group and Conservative councillor Derek Hardman over the lack of such a report. ....

Blackburn plan row: 'No-one has given any consideration to us'

A CONTROVERSIAL scheme to build 165 homes on a gateway to an East Lancashire town centre has generated 78 objections.
The potential housing estate off Whalley Old Road in Blackburn has prompted nearby residents to form a protest group.
The 170 member-strong Sunnybower Community Group has co-ordinated opposition to the project.
On Thursday Blackburn with Darwen Council planning committee will debate the scheme promoted by Liverpool firm Cass Associates.
Objections include its impact on local wildlife, traffic and road safety concerns, the impact on the local environment, increased pollution, and fears that local schools, roads and NHS provision will be inadequate to meet the needs of the new homes. ....
