Credit LONG ROAD DISTILLERS In an effort to encourage workers to apply for a job, four restaurants in West Michigan announced Thursday a decision to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour at each establishment. Officials from Long Road Distillers, The Mitten Brewing Co, Two Scotts Barbecue and The People’s Cider say the new wage goes into effect immediately. The restaurants, which also includes improv club The Comedy Project, all sit at the corner of Leonard and Quarry on Grand Rapids’ Northwest side. Kyle Van Strien is a Co-Owner of Long Road. “We didn’t make this decision out of a position of abundance,” Van Strien said. “This was something that we had to really crunch the numbers and figure out how we continue to be sustainable as a business.” ....
Brown County Port and Resource Recovery Sixteen years ago, three Wisconsin counties pooled their resources, using each of their three public landfills in sequence; as one filled, they began sending to another of the three sites. Through this collaborative agreement Brown, Outagamie, and Winnebago Counties saved $48 million in about 13 years. But by now the communities’ demands have outpaced what this partnership can provide, so they amended the agreement, with plans to build two new, shared landfills, both that will accept residential, commercial, and industrial waste. Brown County’s new South landfill is under construction, slated to launch in 2022. Construction of Outagamie’s new Northwest landfill begins in 2022, and the site is set to launch in 2023. This newest Tri-County agreement will take the counties to 2046, as determined by dividing landfill capacity by annual tonnage estimates. ....
