Group Of West Michigan Restaurants Raise Minimum Wage To $15 Per Hour

In an effort to encourage workers to apply for a job, four restaurants in West Michigan announced Thursday a decision to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour at each establishment.
Officials from Long Road Distillers, The Mitten Brewing Co, Two Scotts Barbecue and The People’s Cider say the new wage goes into effect immediately.
The restaurants, which also includes improv club The Comedy Project, all sit at the corner of Leonard and Quarry on Grand Rapids’ Northwest side.
Kyle Van Strien is a Co-Owner of Long Road.
“We didn’t make this decision out of a position of abundance,” Van Strien said. “This was something that we had to really crunch the numbers and figure out how we continue to be sustainable as a business.” ....

UPDATE: The Grand Rapids City Commission approved the tax exemptions.
GRAND RAPIDS, MI Grand Rapids elected leaders have given initial approval on tax exemptions for six proposed affordable and low-income housing developments in the city.
If all six projects are completed as planned, they would bring 299 apartment units to the city, of which 78 units are anticipated to be permanent supportive housing serving people with disabilities or chronically homeless. ....

One dead in shooting near Grand Rapids hospital complex, possible suspects in custody after later crash

Police identified the person killed as Unique Camreil Evans.
Police about 90 minutes later arrested possible suspects following a crash on Grand Rapids’ Northwest side.
Grand Rapids police said Evans was walking along the sidewalk on Prospect Avenue SE, just south of Cherry Street, at about 11:15 a.m. when he was shot. Someone fired multiple rounds at Evans, police said.
He was taken to a local hospital but did not survive.
Officers had a description of a vehicle from the shooting and located a matching vehicle on the city’s Northwest Side about 12:50 p.m. ....
