DOJ asks for more time to make decision on turning over Trump taxes

By Celine Castronuovo - 03/31/21 09:20 PM EDT

Department of Justice (DOJ) lawyers have requested additional time to determine their response to House Democrats’ request for former President Trump
Lawyers for the department, along with attorneys representing the House Ways and Means Committee, said in a joint filing Wednesday that they have had communications, and anticipate further communications, that may inform Defendants position in this case.
The Justice Department lawyers, who represent the Treasury Department in this matter, asked the judge for an additional month to make a decision on whether to release the tax returns, according to the filing, which was shared with The Hill.  ....

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service announced on Wednesday it is postponing the country s tax-filing deadline until May 17, as the agency grapples with a mounting backlog of 24 million returns awaiting processing since the 2019 tax year.
The workload has put the agency underwater - and under political siege - as lawmakers fret that long-unresolved troubles at the IRS could undercut the Biden administration s economic recovery efforts. Millions of Americans have not received some stimulus checks under prior coronavirus aid packages, even as the tax agency continued distributing payments Wednesday under the $1.9 trillion stimulus signed into law this month. ....

Republicans called the measure already passed by the full Senate a lifeline for 600,000 low-income students who would become entitled to state funding for private school tuition. Minority Democrats argued it would siphon money from already-underfunded public schools and go against the will of voters who rejected the larger expansion in 2018.
Testimony was equally split, with members of a grassroots group who succeeded in putting the 2017 expansion law on the ballot saying the proposal was a special interest giveaway at the expense of public schools and backers noting that public school closures caused by the pandemic made it eve ....
