Now that the final gavel has fallen, legislators are taking some time to talk about what they’ve done. Legislative leaders from both parties held conference calls with reporters Thursday morning to talk about their accomplishments.

A new measure, House Bill 387, was negotiated among Republican lawmakers as they tried to quell fears from a faction of legislators over universities teaching about critical race theory and providing other social justice programs. The cut, along with a bill against critical race theory, helped garner enough votes in the House to approve education budgets. Senators in a 25-8 vote on Tuesday supported the bill, which previously passed the House and will now need Gov. Brad Little s signature. The legislation would provide nearly $629.9 million for colleges and universities for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1. It would cut $500,000 each from the University of Idaho and Idaho State University and ....

SPR s Doug Nadvornick reports. As Idaho’s legislature moves to the end of its session, lawmakers have said yes to a new Medicaid budget and then no to money for more Covid testing in schools. Rep. Paul Amador [R-Coeur d Alene] stuck his tongue in his cheek when introduced the state’s proposed $3.7 billion Medicaid budget. “This is everybody’s favorite budget so I’m privileged to carry it today, he said. Medicaid is the state medical program for people with lower incomes. Amador acknowledged it’s a lot of money. “I think all of us are probably frustrated with out-of-control spending related to Medicaid and that primarily is based upon enrollment growth and policies that have been adopted by the state and by the federal government related to Medicaid, Amador said. ....
