Washington [US], June 22 (ANI): Scientists at Ohio State University are pursuing a new strategy in the protracted fight against the SARS-CoV-2 virus by engineering nanobodies that can neutralise virus variants in two different ways.
An accelerated article preview of the study was published online in the journal Nature.
In lab studies, researchers identified two groups of molecules that were effective against virus variants. Using different mechanisms, nanobodies in each group bypassed mutations and disabled the virus s ability to bind to the receptor that lets it enter host cells.
Though vaccination is enabling the resumption of some pre-pandemic activities in parts of the world, SARS-CoV-2 is rapidly working its way around vaccines by mutating itself. In this study, the nanobodies neutralised three emerging variants: Alpha, Beta and Gamma. ....

Scientists Find Small 'Unicorn' Black Hole Close to Earth

Scientists at Ohio State University have discovered a record-breaking black hole. It is both one of the smallest black holes ever detected and the closest to Earth (1,500 light-years away and still inside the Milky Way galaxy).
“When we looked at the data, this black hole the Unicorn just popped out,” lead author Tharindu Jayasinghe, a doctoral student in astronomy at The Ohio State University, said in a statement.
Black holes cannot be seen, of course, but they can be detected by their corresponding stars. Scientists at Ohio State University now report that they have discovered the closest black hole to Earth so far, dubbing the celestial wonder The Unicorn.
The findings were published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society on Wednesday, and researchers say the newly discovered black hole is also among the smallest in space.
The Unicorn is around three times the mass of the sun, which is still very small for a black hole, scientists say. One of the researchers who made the discovery, Tharindu Jayasinghe, suggested that the black hole was found almost by chance. The University described it as hiding in plain sight amo ....
